This week’s update is written by Mrs Victoria Stringer, Deputy Head of Primary.
On Monday 30th March, we will begin our annual Earth Week celebrations. Throughout the week, all students across the primary school will take part in a range of activities and discussions designed to raise awareness of environmental issues. This year, our focus is ‘BSKL for Malayan Tigers’, where students will learn about the challenges facing the Malayan Tiger and what we can do to help protect this important species.
As part of our Earth Week learning, we are focusing on key global themes linked to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Sustainable Development Goals. In particular, we are exploring Article 6 (the right to life, survival and development) and Article 29 (education that develops respect for the natural environment), alongside SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land). These are important as they help children understand their role in protecting the planet, caring for wildlife such as the Malayan Tiger, and developing the knowledge and values needed to create a more sustainable future.
We will launch the week with Tiger Day on Monday 30th March. Children are invited to come to school dressed in orange and black or wearing their official BSKL for Malayan Tigers t-shirt. Children are welcome to bring in donations to support efforts to protect the Malayan Tiger. On the same day, our Tiger Team have organised an exciting Tiger Market on the Lower Hill Campus from 3:00pm to 4:30pm. There will be a variety of food vendors, student-led stalls, merchandise and games for the whole community to enjoy. The Tiger Team will also be running a bake sale, and we would be very grateful for any donations of cakes or treats.
I must make a special mention of all of our students across primary and secondary who have been part of the Tiger Team organising the event. A huge well done to them for their hard work in organising and promoting this event. The Tiger Team have shown outstanding commitment, working closely with Sasha and Zac to raise awareness of the Malayan Tiger, an important national symbol of Malaysia.
During Earth week, we are delighted to welcome Perhilitan, who will be setting up an exhibition in the Lower Hill library, giving students a powerful insight into the threats facing the Malayan Tiger. Please do come and see this when you are in school.
We will also be hosting a range of visitors and workshops, including The Free Tree Society, as well as author visits from Roger Cowdrey and Anak Rimba, who will be sharing stories and speaking with students across the primary school.
Don’t forget to encourage your child to enter our tiger-themed art competition. We have already had some amazing entries and would love to celebrate all of the children’s hard work.
We look forward to a meaningful and engaging week for all of our students to raise awareness of the Malayan Tiger and to deepen the children’s understanding of what they can do to care for our planet.
Warm regards,
MRS VICTORIA STRINGER
