As artificial intelligence continues to evolve at pace, its capabilities are becoming increasingly impressive. From analysing vast amounts of data to generating detailed responses in seconds, AI is reshaping how we approach work and learning. Yet, as its role expands, an important question remains: can AI truly think critically, or does that responsibility still lie with humans?

For students growing up in an AI-enabled world, this distinction is more important than ever. The ability to use AI effectively is no longer optional. However, the responsibility for judgement, interpretation and decision-making still rests firmly with the individual.

At The British International School Kuala Lumpur (BSKL), this balance is central to how students are prepared for the future. Not as passive users of technology, but as thoughtful individuals capable of guiding and questioning it.

The limits of artificial thinking

AI excels at identifying patterns, processing information and producing outputs based on existing data. It can mimic reasoning, replicate structure and even simulate creativity. However, it does not understand in the way humans do. It does not possess awareness, intention or the ability to independently question its own conclusions.

Critical thinking involves more than arriving at an answer. It requires judgement, context, and the ability to evaluate what should be done, not just what could be done.

This is where human input becomes indispensable. The person using AI remains the final decision-maker: selecting prompts, assessing responses, and determining what is meaningful, accurate or appropriate.

The risk of comfort and complacency

One of the more subtle risks of AI is not misuse, but over-reliance. When answers are readily available, there is a natural temptation to accept them without further scrutiny. Over time, this can lead to a form of intellectual complacency, where convenience replaces curiosity, and speed overrides depth.

Relying too heavily on AI can create a false sense of competence. Tasks may be completed more quickly, but without the underlying understanding that makes learning transferable and enduring.

In education, this matters deeply. If students defer their thinking to AI, they risk missing the very experiences that develop independence, resilience and intellectual confidence. Discomfort, challenge and even struggle are not barriers to learning - they are essential parts of it.

AI as an enabler, not a replacement

Rather than replacing human thinking, AI has the potential to enhance it, but only when used with intention.

Deputy Head of Secondary (Academic) at BSKL, Dr Bruce Geddes has a background in psychology and computing. He informs his perspective on this shift, highlighting the transformative role AI can play.

“AI will be a vital tool that we will all need to use, not just teachers, but everyone in every field and economic sector. The expectation of our capabilities and output will be twice, or 10 times more over the next year or so. And if is rightly so to leverage the power of AI to be more effective at teaching.

“This will be enable AI primarily to help us with the more mundane tasks such as data analysis, giving feedback, constructing lesson plans, but also more advanced things, such as creating new and previously uncreatable learning interactions, that will dramatically increase the ability to efficiently do mundane things.”

His insight points to a future where AI supports efficiency and unlocks new possibilities, freeing educators and students to focus on higher-level thinking.

He also describes how AI could reshape the learning experience itself.

“You could easily see a situation whereby a pupil would be having lots of check and corrects done through an AI-enabled app. And as a result of their answers, it will create a tailored set of next steps so they are not just given a score back, but they're given very specific actions that they must do to get a better score next time. So, we'll be moving to more of a kind of gated learning progression path.”

This vision illustrates AI’s potential to personalise learning in ways previously not possible. Yet, even in such an environment, the learner’s role remains active. Students must still engage, interpret feedback, and apply their understanding.

Who is doing the thinking?

As AI becomes more integrated into daily learning, a key question emerges: who is doing the thinking?

If AI is used to support reflection, challenge assumptions and extend ideas, it becomes a powerful educational tool. But if it begins to replace the thinking process altogether, its value diminishes.

The distinction lies in how it is used. Critical engagement requires students to:

  • Question the validity of AI-generated responses
  • Consider context, bias and alternative perspectives
  • Make informed decisions about what to accept or reject
  • Take ownership of the final outcome

In this sense, AI does not reduce the need for critical thinking; it amplifies it.

A human skill in an AI world

The growing presence of AI does not diminish the importance of human judgement; it makes it more essential. In a world where answers are abundant, the ability to evaluate, interpret and apply them responsibly becomes a defining skill.
