Memories to Treasure

Memories to Treasure - memories-to-treasure
Memories to Treasure Students of all ages learn best when they are engaged and enjoying their learning.

Students of all ages learn best when they are engaged and enjoying their learning.

In Key Stage 2 at the British School of Nanjing, great importance is always placed upon finding new and exciting ways to teach crucial concepts.  With this in mind, the students of Year 5 became pirates for one Mathematics lesson this month, searching for clues that might lead them to an ancient, buried treasure!

The great treasure hunt took place outdoors in our beautiful Primary playground where a series of clues had been hidden in a variety of secret locations. The children had previously been developing their comprehension of a range of important mathematical vocabulary relating to addition and subtraction, and each clue that they found featured a multi-step mathematical word problem to solve which would check and reinforce their understanding of these important terms.

After collaborating together in small groups to find all of the clues and solve each word problem, the students were able to complete their map and find the location of the great and mysterious treasure! It proved to be a fun and memorable activity where the real treasure was the learning itself.
