English as Additional Language Support

Within Primary, we offer EAL literacy and guided reading support for to help them build their confidence and skills in general English.

The EAL specialist and class teachers work in close partnership to monitor and assess learner progress and provide tailored support for each student receiving EAL support. Instruction is conducted in small groups to ensure the EAL specialist teacher can respond to individual learners' needs. Lessons are linked to skills and topics being learnt in the mainstream curriculum to help learners access English-language education to their fullest potential.

During Secondary, we provide targeted support for students with high EAL needs, particularly those developing core English skills. Our tailored curriculum ensures lessons are accessible yet challenging, with explicit grammar teaching in class and through homework. Students complete English proficiency assessments twice a year to track progress and guide personalised interventions.

Additional support includes interventions which build key skills, and a dedicated EAL group focused on reading and grammar confidence. We also offer an extra-curricular English-speaking club, providing a relaxed space to practise conversation. This multi-layered approach ensures students develop the language skills needed to succeed across the curriculum and feel confident in their use of English.

Vietnamese as Additional Language Support

In addition to EAL support, we also provide Vietnamese as an Additional Language (VAL) support for students in Primary and Secondary whose first language is not Vietnamese. These students attend timetabled small-group lessons led by a specialist Vietnamese teacher, designed to build confidence and develop key language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

VAL lessons are closely aligned with the Vietnamese curriculum, enabling learners to access classroom content more effectively. Just like EAL provision, VAL support is tailored to individual student needs and progress is closely monitored.

Inclusion

We firmly believe that every child’s progress and attainment should be understood in relation to their individual development. We recognise and celebrate the neurodiverse strengths within our school community and tailor our support to each child’s unique learning journey.

Inclusion at BVIS is not a tick box exercise—it is a shared commitment embraced by all staff. To create a truly inclusive environment, we rely on our greatest resource: our dedicated and passionate teaching team.

We understand that the strongest support a child can receive comes from the positive relationships they build with trusted adults. These relationships create a sense of safety and belonging, enabling children to fully engage in learning.

We provide personalised support throughout our Primary and Secondary, recognising that each learner interacts with their support differently.

Our approaches are carefully tailored to meet individual needs and to foster meaningful progress. This ranges from individualized learning plans, inclusive classroom strategies and small group intervention sessions.

We prioritise the early identification of learning barriers through the assess, plan, do, review cycle, ensuring timely and effective interventions. We also pride ourselves in working closely with parents
