Our 12th French Baccalaureate and 13th International Baccalaureate students left their classrooms recently for an outdoor adventure in our Forest School area. They enjoyed immersing themselves in nature, and they also took a deep dive into something new: the world of sylvotherapy.

What is sylvotherapy?

Coming from the Latin word for “forest” (silva), sylvotherapy is a practice originating in Japan that consists of spending time in the woods to gain well-being and serenity. Also known as “forest bathing”, this technique invites people to connect with nature and focus on their senses.

Take a walk in the woods. Breathe in the fresh air, note the smell of the trees. Listen to the leaves rustling in the wind. Taste the sweetness of a freshly picked apple. Touch the bark of a tree, lean against it as you sit under the shade – and sure, why not give it a hug and stretch your arms?

As our students have discovered, there are many ways for us to experience the forest. By slowing down and engaging the senses, we learn to relax while being more attentive to our environment. Our students have learnt what numerous scientific studies have proven: outdoor immersion in nature helps us to feel calm, improves spatial awareness and boosts the immune system.

The fast pace of modern life has made it increasingly difficult for children to spend time in nature. Surrounded by digital screens and daily pressures, many young people fall into the unhealthy routines of an urban, sedentary lifestyle.

This is why opportunities like the Forest School at Collège Champittet are so important. By regularly taking our students of all ages outdoors, we inspire positive habits that can last a lifetime. Through shared activities in nature, our students develop key skills in socialising, cooperation, trust, autonomy and creativity. They enjoy physical activity as well as peaceful stillness. They become more resilient and agile, both physically and mentally.

Taking a “forest bath” is good for the body and the mind. After all, learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom, and nature has many lessons to teach us!
