What do music composition, design and artificial intelligence have in common? They’re all part of the theme for this year’s STEAM Fair: “Designing Music Solutions with Artificial Intelligence”.
From researching music history to composing with AI and inventing sustainable instruments, our Champittet students have been using their knowledge and imagination to develop exciting new projects. In classes and teams, our students are competing to tackle this year’s STEAM challenges, which are based on our educational collaboration with MIT.
For the first part, “Designing Solutions with AI”, we’ve challenged our students to use artificial intelligence to create a piece of music in the style of a musical period of their choosing. As part of the second challenge, “Designing Solutions for the Climate”, our students must consider the musical instrument selected to play their AI composition and propose a new way to build the instrument using biodegradable raw materials. In short, this is an absolute adventure into the heart of STEAM, blending skills in science, technology, the arts, mathematics and more!
For the second challenge, our learners observed and tested different materials for their biodegradability. Lab coats on, our students mixed and experimented with everyday substances like cornstarch, glycerol, agar, milk and vinegar. They also investigated the data required by AI to determine the best eco-friendly materials for designing their musical instrument.
Finally, our young inventors had to create a brief video to present their project. That’s because our students are competing not only with other teams at Collège Champittet, but also with peers at Nord Anglia schools all over the world through our Global Campus platform.
Of course, our students will also showcase their creative work at our STEAM Fair in April. Each class will set up a special booth featuring their chosen musical period, atmosphere and compositions. We can’t wait to see them all – and to see which class will win the 1000 CHF prize for a school outing!
