“Literary Passport” encourages good reading habits

Literary Passport - Literary Passport

We know that building reading habits from an early age brings a whole range of benefits, from better cognitive skills to heightened creativity and empathy. That’s why we strive to foster a culture of reading among our students at Collège Champittet. One of our recent initiatives, the Literary Passport, is nurturing a community of enthusiastic readers in French, English and German.

Literary Passport inspires active reading

For the third year, we have invited our students in grades 6 to 8 to participate in the Literary Passport programme. Participation is voluntary, but the number of participants has been growing each year, proving that reading is indeed an exciting journey for all!

Our teachers have suggested a variety of books for our students to explore in French, English and German, all of which are available in our school library. When students finish reading a book, they can get their passport “stamped” by meeting with the teacher who recommended that particular book. The student gives a brief summary and answers the teacher’s questions in order to validate their reading.

Discovering the rewards of reading

The more books a student reads in their Literary Passport, the more points they can earn by the end of the school year. These extra credit points are then added to their overall average.

While this opportunity is giving our young readers an extra incentive to dig into a good book, many of our students are discovering that the joy of reading is its own reward. Addison, one of our 7th graders, recently reported with pride that she read a whole 200-page book on a Wednesday afternoon – talk about voracious reading!

As our Literary Passport participants have found, reading opens doors to fantastic adventures. Even without a passport, why not take some time to get lost in a good book?
