The arrival of spring is a wonderful time for our young learners to take a break from daily routines and explore the world. In March, our primary students immersed themselves in nature and new experiences through several outings. At the same time, our World Book Day celebrations and Learn-O workshops also introduced our children to a world of discovery – right here at Collège Champittet.
Our 1st-graders experienced the joy of baking on our visit to the “Maison du Blé et du Pain” bakery. From kneading dough to forming their own braided bread, our students had a wonderful time discovering firsthand the steps involved in this artisanal profession. Our young bakers learned about the ingredients that go into bread, practised their fine motor skills and teamwork, and enjoyed a delicious reward at the end – their own freshly baked bread, ready to share with their parents.
Another group of primary students enjoyed an outing to the quaint Swiss village of Romainmôtier. Our young explorers were thrilled to see llamas and alpacas up close while out on a nature walk to discover the local surroundings!
Finally, our primary students had the chance to observe the change in seasons on campus at Collège Champittet, with the blossoming of our magnificent magnolia tree. We celebrated the arrival of spring with cake and tea, and our children marked the occasion by dressing in spring colours – and some even prepared a special dance!
Our primary learners have also discovered that a world of adventure is sometimes right around the corner – in a good book, or an inspiring new way of learning.
In March, our entire primary school celebrated our World Book Day by reading and bringing our favourite books to life. Throughout the day, the sound of reading and storytelling filled the air – primary students reading aloud and to each other, older students sharing stories with younger ones, and pairs of students deep in conversation about what they’ve read.
We strengthened our language skills with stories in English and German, and we also celebrated our love of reading in other ways: wearing costumes to represent our favourite characters, making our own comics or illustrated books, sharing book reports and performing our favourite passages. The event created new connections between students and further fostered our culture of reading at Collège Champittet.
In March, we also welcomed Learn-O back to Collège Champittet for several captivating learning adventures. Our workshop organisers led students in a variety of fun, hands-on challenges, guiding our learners to build new skills in spatial awareness, geometry, verb conjugation and logic – all while staying physically active and completing activities with maps, course markers, elastic bands and other objects. As our primary students have found, learning is always an adventure – whether indoors or outdoors!
