Nellie Quinn to hold a full day visit, performing at assemblies, holding Master Classes and observing Year Groups
On 20th May, Juilliard alumnus Nellie Quinn will begin the day performing for the Secondary and Primary assemblies, and will tell her story of how she became a prolific pianist. Immediately afterwards, she will give a special performance for a Year 1 class, where students will have the opportunity to ask her questions about what it’s like to live as a concert pianist.
Two separate Master Class sessions have been organised for the Upper Primary and Secondary students. A select group of students will get the chance to perform for Nellie in front of an audience, and will receive constructive feedback on taking their musical talent to the next level.
The DCIS TV crew and DCIS Radio will be on hand to record the day as it unfolds, so everyone can be part of this exciting opportunity.
Nellie Quinn began her musical journey at the early age of four. At the encouragement of her tutor, Ms Lena Ching, she furthered her musical education at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, England in her early teens. There, she had the opportunities to participate in master classes by Maria Curcio, Krystian Zimmermann, Paul Badura-Skoda and many others. Named as the Audi Young Musician of the Year in 1995, Nellie also concertised widely around Europe, including a solo recital at Steinway Hall, London. After graduating high school, Nellie was accepted to the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City, where she obtained both her Bachelor and Masters’ degrees under the tutelage of Oxana Yablonskaya and Jerome Lowenthal. In 2000, Nellie made her concerto debut with the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Dmitri Yablonski at Tchaikovsky Hall, Moscow. Nellie was recently awarded her Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The City University of New York, where she studied with Thomas Sauer—founder and director of the esteemed Beethoven Institute, a weeklong summer intensive program held annually at Mannes College of Music.
Besides solo piano performance, Nellie is an active chamber musician and views it as a form of learning through the exchange of musical ideas. Before moving to Singapore, Nellie was an adjunct lecturer at City College of New York and College of Staten Island. As an educator, she strongly believes in building a strong technical foundation and providing historical context in order for a student to excel in their musical endeavour. Nellie is currently serving on the faculty at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts.
