Dear DCIS Parents and Guardians,
This week from 3rd – 9th October 2016 we are supporting Dyslexia Awareness Week at DCIS. Rather than focus on a label, we are thinking about how we are all different learners and how dyslexia is just one of the many different learning styles an individual might have. Over one in ten of the UK population is estimated to have difficulties associated with dyslexia, meaning that in a classroom of 20, there could be two children who present with difficulties in reading, writing, listening and spelling. Raising awareness for students, their families and teachers is key to ensuring that all learners have early access to the support they need.
In Primary School we are talking about our individual learning styles to identify what helps us with our learning. This might be a quiet space, positioning in the classroom, movement breaks or specific support with Maths or English. We will then create our very own ‘Learner Profile’ to use in class. In Secondary, we are following the theme ‘Identification of Dyslexia’ suggested by the British Dyslexia Association. Students will be completing activities in form time throughout the week which will give them a deeper understanding of the challenges facing individuals with dyslexia. More information can be found on the British Dyslexia Association website here.
Last year two of our students also made this fantastic video as part of Dyslexia Awareness Week to share their experience of living with and overcoming these learning challenges. Click here to view the video.
Kind regards,
Alison Ford

Our Year 7 students went on two amazing trips to Sibu Island, Malaysia, for their year group residential. Surrounded by the beauty of nature and immersed in a vibrant new culture, students had the chance to connect with their friends and make memories that will last forever.
