Dover Court students' achievements at FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition 2023

FOBISIA Primary Maths Competition 2023 - FOBISIA Primary Maths Competition 2023
Four Year 6 students were selected to participate in the FOBISIA Primary Mathematics Competition 2023 in Bangkok at Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) in March.

Our Dover Court Year 6 students Avika, Talia, Sammi and Aarna had an amazing four days at the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) Primary Mathematics Competition 2023, held in Bangkok at Singapore International School of Bangkok (SISB) in March.

The students participated in a range of activities, from a 90 minute individual test, to running around a discovery museum for an amazing race! All the students were excellent competitors and ambassadors for the school, and they all shared how much they enjoyed connecting with students from the other FOBISIA schools. The Dover Court students finished 10th out of 26 schools, with some amazing individual results; Avika received a Silver and Talia received a Bronze Medal in the Individual Rounds.

The Year 6 mathematicians worked brilliantly as a team and should be very proud of their fantastic achievements representing Dover Court.

“On day one, we travelled to Bangkok to participate in the FOBISIA Maths Competition. Aarna, Talia, Sammi and Avika are the names of the four students who participated. When we arrived in Bangkok, we were given lanyards with a certain colour to represent our team. After that, we had a late lunch of chicken burgers and explored the school a bit. About 2 hours later, we had a gala dinner and enjoyed performances. We signed our names on a FOBISIA wall and explored our dormitory.

On day two, we competed in the Maths Mastermind and the Maths Amazing Race. The Maths Mastermind was a competition where we had to make an equation out of four given numbers that equal another given number. The Maths Amazing Race was a race where we had to complete all four stations in two museum buildings and try to be the fastest school to clock in, or finish.

On day three, we had the individual test first thing in the morning. We were all a bit nervous. The individual test was one and a half hours. There were 15 multiple-choice questions and 5 open-ended ones. The open-ended ones were extremely hard and were worth a lot of marks. It was very pressurising but we made it in the end. After that, we had the ‘Digital Maths Escape Room’ in the auditorium. We had to escape the Google form room and clock in our time. Our final activity was the live buzzer round. We had to quickly calculate the answers to the questions and press the buzzer to get points. After we finished all the activities, we had the awards ceremony. Our school came 10th!!! For the individual test, Talia got a bronze medal and Avika got a silver medal. Everyone did really well!! We had a farewell gala dinner and went to bed.

On day 4, we woke up at 6.15am Bangkok Time so we could pack. After that, we had breakfast in the cafeteria so we could leave early for our 11.00am flight. In the flight, Aarna and Talia made a video about our trip on iMovie. When we landed, we were all really happy to see our parents.”
