I have always had an interest in sociology, society and the human psyche and it was this which led me to my undergraduate course of Social Science from University College of Dublin. During this unit, I studied a lot of child development theorists and this encouraged my wish to become a teacher so after a year of travelling I returned home and began my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at Christchurch University, Canterbury.
It is hard to believe that my teaching career has reached almost a decade as this is my ninth year of teaching. After graduating, I worked for two years at a school in Stockwell, London. I had fun working with the Year 3 and 4 classes there and loved learning the different cultures of the students as the area was very multicultural. Following this, I moved to Spain for one year where I taught Year 3 again. It was in 2012 that I began my BCB journey and moved to Sao Paulo. I loved the challenge of working in Nursery for three years and this experience really gave me the opportunity to understand the development of early literacy and numeracy skills. Working in Nursery also helped me to rediscover the magic of those simple things in life as the younger students learned or something for the first time. Following this, I taught Year 3 for another three years during which I held the position of Primary Maths Coordinator. This year I am thoroughly enjoying being in Year One, along with supporting and developing the teachers and students of Key Stage One in my role as Key Stage One Coordinator. I love a challenge and think it important to teach across all ages of the primary school as it has helped to develop my teaching skills and knowledge.
The move to Brazil has been a wonderful opportunity for me to learn another language and I am proud to say that, after lots of ups and downs,t I speak Portuguese fluently. Learning another language is something which I never believed I was capable of. I love to travel and feel that working in an International School has helped me to appreciate this even more and during holidays, my husband and I like to explore new places in Brazil, South America and Europe.
