University Picks of the Month: September

02 October 2017

This month, we enjoyed some more exciting visits from universities all over the world. In addition to this, Mr. Dave, our Secondary School Counsellor, had the opportunity to travel to the Institute on International Admission & Guidance hosted by The East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) and Council of International Schools (CIS).

Blue Mountains

As one of the most famous management schools in the region, and the first in Australia to promote an internationally recognised hotel management program, Blue Mountains is an obvious consideration for any of our students looking at Hotel Management. Some Northbridge alumni have already been students at this school and we have students currently looking to apply. Hotel Management, Global Business Management and Culinary arts are some of their most popular choices.

University of Auckland

Started in 1883, and set in the beautiful city on the North Island of New Zealand, the University of Auckland offers some exciting choices for any student interested in the fields of Engineering, Commerce, Law and even Archaeology. This is a traditional university in a politically stable area and despite being highly ranked, is a viable option for most IB students. The University of Auckland makes New Zealand an interesting option for anyone considering Australia.

Victoria University

As one of Australia's few dual-sector universities, students can easily transition from vocational education to higher education - such as from a certificate or diploma course through to an undergraduate degree or even a postgraduate qualification by coursework or research. As one of 39 public universities in Australia, graduates can be assured their qualification from Victoria University is being awarded from a university operating in a world-class education system. Victoria University is known as the top university in Australia for Sports Science. This university has several locations around Melbourne and also a few study abroad options. This was a first time visit to Northbridge for VU and we look forward to working with them into the future.

University of British Columbia

As one of the world’s top research universities, the University of British Columbia Has two locations in Canada —in Vancouver and the Okanagan—This world class university attracts more than 60,000 students from Canada and 150+ countries around the world. We currently have two students from  the graduating class of 2017 in attendance at UBC. Exciting offers are a Bachelor of Design degree, and their ever popular dual degree Bachelor of Arts and Master of Management. They continue to offer merit based scholarships to high achieving students. Another exciting idea about studying in Canada is that the government gives a 3 year open work permit to all graduates. With this being in the top 20 public universities in the world, it should be a consideration for all our students.

International Admission & Guidance Conference  |  CIS-Earcos  September 22-23

This was an exciting opportunity to network with over 170 universities and approximately 200 counsellors from around the world, and learn from a variety of speakers sharing their experiences on higher education and admissions.

During the workshop sessions we were able to gain further detailed insight into university admissions from other counsellors and university admissions directors. Topics covered included; ethics in the application process, subject focus in UK degrees , the Evolving Role of the SAT in College Admissions, and optimizing student application success, to mention a few. These sessions were lead by seasoned professionals and will further enable us to continue to have an Ambitious counselling program.
