Our Head of Secondary Writes About Leadership

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others" — Bill Gates. The school is a fantastic place to thrive and develop for all of our students as we prepare our students for a future beyond school in a working world that is constantly changing.

Opportunity is an often used word in BISS Puxi, but those who have a drive and passion in school have many chances for leadership and we are constantly looking to provide more. There are many occasions in school where students take part in excellent projects that offer leadership roles. In the last week we have had students organise and present our charity Giving Tree bags in Zhejiang Province and students participate in an international student service project in Thailand where they we encouraged to lead change for a better world. We are constantly striving to encourage students to have more personal responsibility. It may be a very simple good morning to a visitor to show the effectiveness of good social graces or being a form representative or a whole school figurehead such as the heads of the school council or being member of clubs that show leadership such as the Model United Nations.

Leadership opportunities are everywhere. I am sure the Winter Wonderland in January will be a wonderful event and this has been organised by our IB students who have shown a mix of collective leadership and individual drive to organise themselves and work successfully with teachers and the PTA. Our sports team all have leaders at all ages and all must lead by example of spirit, determination and fair play. Individual students have lead the school anti bullying day and others from year 9 to 12 are currently organising their trip to Tanzania by fund raising for themselves.

In the New Year we will look to broaden opportunities further from actively leading change for the better in the local community and we will be looking for house leaders to drive on competition in the school. With so many parents who are also in key positions of responsibility I would very much welcome you into school to  inspire our students with a talk from 20 minutes to an hour your about your experiences, responsibilities, role models and philosophy. It would be great for students to hear and see examples from real life beyond the school.
