We want all our children to have the best environment for learning, in the different learning spaces throughout the school and especially within their classrooms. We have worked hard to create great classrooms filled with natural light, order and resources that both support and inspire learning. We also know that children learn best in an organised space, free from clutter and too many distractions. This doesn’t mean perfect and pristine but where resources and furniture are purposefully and functionally organised to allow for easy and quick access by teachers and students. This calm order also promotes independence and a sense of responsibility in the children as we want them to develop good organisational skills and smooth classroom routines.
BUT, we also know from experience that children have a tendency to be a bit messy and careless with their belongings so we are piloting some new seat tidies in all the classrooms in Years 1 and 2. We have designed and had made some special seat covers for the children’s chairs that have pockets on the back. Each child can store their pencil cases, reading records, water bottles and mini-white boards within easy access. This means that the tables are free of clutter and also that children are not distracted or wandering around the room looking for their things. The outcome is better use of time and space and greater focus on learning. We do like our new seat covers and think they are proving to be a great success and definitely popular with the children who are now taking pride in being more organised.
"I really like my seat cover because it keeps my folder safe." - Melanie 1U
"I like them because they look the same as the chairs and I didn't see them at first!" - Pauli, 1U
