A Warm Welcome to Primary

29 August 2014

Our first week of the new school year has quickly passed and it has been wonderful to have the school yet again full of life and energy.

Early in the week there were some anxious moments as our new students took their first steps into their lives at BISS Puxi, and some tears as our youngest students realised that they were actually staying at school without their parents! However, the overwhelming feeling has been one of excitement and happiness to embark on a new year of learning, inspired by enthusiastic and skilled staff, and surrounded by a wonderful learning environment.

Most striking has been the real sense of community and generosity to support others across all areas of the school and ensure a Warm Welcome for all. Our children have taken on the role of class buddies very seriously, delighted to help new classmates to feel welcome and secure. They are being sensitive, inclusive and proud to show off their school and look after others. We are also fortunate to welcome a number of energetic and skilled new teachers to our team and our existing staff have been highly supportive and worked in a collegiate way to ensure we are all fully prepared for a great school year. Not least, our parent community has also extended a very warm and practical welcome to our new families. Throughout our Orientation Days and PTA Coffee Morning, they have been meeting new (and returning) families and supporting them as they transition to life in China. Look out for the Red Shirts which identify our PTA New Parent Programme Team as they are a fantastic resource to help you with every aspect of life in China!

The PTA Coffee Morning was the first event held in The Gallery, one of our fantastic new learning spaces that have been created as part of our latest refurbishment. This indoor- outdoor space will be great for dance and music, but also serve as a wonderful venue for a wide range of student and parent events. Our new Foyer and Parent Hub are already being well used, creating a more welcoming and practical entrance to Primary. We also have an amazing Cooking Room, Science Lab, Den, Stage One theatre, Computer Room and lots of new classrooms so we encourage you to come along to our Meet & Greet sessions on Thursday 4 September when you can not only find out lots of information from your child's teacher, but also go exploring to visit our wonderful new spaces.

Of course there has been a lot of work on the building and so we are being rigorous in ensuring that the school is fresh and safe for our children. Only quality and safe materials have been used, our air purifiers are currently on 24 hours a day, doors and windows remain open as much as possible, and we have a large cleaning and maintenance team working round the clock. We have some small details to finish off but I hope you agree that we have created a wonderful environment for learning at BISS Puxi.

As is the case at the start of a new school year, you have received a lot of letters and essential information to ensure we all get off to a good start. From this point, much of our communication to you will be directed via our website; calendar, blogs, newsletter, year group news, Moodle. We do encourage you to regularly visit the website to ensure you have all the information you need to know what is happening and best support your child’s learning. Please also check their communication book on a daily basis as this is an important means of communication for teachers.

It has been a great week and a great start to the year. We are confident and excited about the exciting experiences we are going to share with you and your children throughout this school year!  Welcome!

- Niki Meehan, Head of Primary
