Year 7s Spell Their Hearts Out

07 January 2015

The Year 7 Spelling Bee is an annual event to engage students with the importance of spelling from the beginning of their secondary school life. Gemma Treeby, Head of English tells us about this year’s Bee.

  • Year 7s from BISS Puxi take part in the annual Spelling Bee

Each week in English class, we have a SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) lesson, where the students engage in various group and independent activities to take the anxiety out of making mistakes.

In the spirit of High Performance Learning, we like to celebrate excellent achievement and those who excel. Therefore, each year four spellers from each class are chosen by their classmates to represent their class and compete for Spelling Bee group and individual champions of the year. Our competitors this year were as follows:

Ms Powter’s class: Arnulf Trym, Hong Xu (Cian) Choo, Thomas Roberts and Lara Woo

Ms Rhodes’ class: Jahaan Sachdeva, Tengis Kelly, Philip Lucas and Daryl Chan

Ms Mitchell’s class: Harry Johnson, Arush Garg, Natarsha Yan and Munique Tan

Ms Treeby’s class: Etash Sinha, Kuan Hong Tan, Yoseph Kim and Ga Eun Choi

Students competed in a series of rounds which involved individual and team spellings. The final round was between Ms Treeby’s group and Ms Mitchell’s (Set 1 vs Set 4), which is a great reflection of High Performance Learning in action as students were able to make excellent progress in spelling regardless of set. Last year it was in fact Set 3 that won and the individual speller had recently moved up from learning English as an Additional Language.

Our individual speller of the year was Natarsha Yan and Ms Mitchell’s class were the overall winners. Well done to everyone involved and to all the cheerleaders too helping to encourage their classmates!

- Gemma Treeby, Head of English
