Winter Holds No Challenges for Year 1

01 December 2015

With 1 December commonly accepted as the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s appropriate that Year One have learnt about keeping warm and waterproof these past few weeks.

  • Year 1 Making Soup

Last week, they were very busy helping Barnaby Bear during his visit to the North Pole. To help Barnaby keep warm, we made him some healthy vegetable soup. Before making our soup, we used the scales to help us weigh the different ingredients. We thought that the potatoes were very heavy and the stock cubes were very light.

We then carefully put all of the ingredients into a bowl to cook. We gently stirred the soup and thought it smelt good. After the soup had finished cooking, we couldn’t wait to try it. We used lots of adjectives to describe our soup including- tasty, delicious and yummy.

Earlier in November, 1S and 1U had an amazing time taking part in our Forest School’s program. During our first week, we got to know our environment and learned how to keep ourselves safe. After we went in search of hidden treasures, we then used lots of different and exciting adjectives to describe our treasures. We were then set the challenge of using all of our treasures to build a forest creature so we created dragons, bears and rabbits!

The following week, we then explored lots of different materials. We carried out an investigation to find out which materials would be waterproof and then used these materials to help build a waterproof shelter for our cuddly toys. We really enjoyed testing out our shelters when pretending that it had started to rain!
