Showcasing Talent at the GCSE Art Exhibition

27 May 2015

The Year 11 GCSE Art Exhibition displays a colourful array of work by our talented students. The moderator visited on Monday to assess the work and students and teachers have been making the most of having some amazing work on display in school.

Congratulations to the 14 artists for their hard work and commitment throughout the two year course, which really shines through in their artwork on display.

These students have demonstrated an ability to work with a variety of materials and techniques from digital manipulation to hand woven sculpture.  This exhibition is a celebration of the progression they have each made over the two years and is an opportunity to show their creative investigations.

In Year 10 students work on three topics: Natural Forms, Portraits and Places. In Year 11 Surfaces and the exam paper ‘Together and/or Apart’ are the focus of investigation. Students are encouraged to explore these themes to develop their skills and understanding of the world of art and design. As demonstrated in the diversity seen in this year’s GCSE art show there are many ways to interpret and respond to these starting points.

Thank you to Miss Selden, Miss Dixon and Jenny for their hard work and for encouraging and supporting the students through the two year programme.

We hope you will come to see the show which will be up till 12 June and here are some of the wonderful comments the show has received so far from the children and teachers from across the school who have come to view it…

Miss Bridge and the Reception Racoons:
“It was really interesting for the Reception students to see that the art could be made out of all different objects and material just like when we make our art work when junk modelling! Some of the students’ favourite pieces were the pictures of the Pearl tower, as we have recently been on a boat trip on the river and were busy spotting all the buildings.  The girls liked the dress as they thought it was particularly beautiful and princess like!  Another favourite of the Raccoons was the surprised or shocked face: the children enjoyed mirroring the picture when they looked at it.”

Miss Rawson and the Reception Pandas:
“The girls loved the red dress and the umbrella and the boys really liked the pictures and models of the bund. Thank you for having us, we had a brilliant time looking at all the amazing art!”

Frida Raask, Year 7:
“I really like Xiao Feng He's painting. I like the colours used in the painting, because they show a story. It's very well done.”

Paulo Hansen, Year 7:
“I like Tin Yat Yeng’s picture because when he looks at me I start to wonder what he is thinking about.'

Mr Lister:
“I loved Soo Bin's cool modern images of the Shanghai I know and love. She captured what the city looks like to me perfectly! It made me want to get on my bike and ride around Shanghai. I also really like Enrica's funky mirror collection! It was interesting, quirky and different. It made me think of the saying "Never judge a book by its cover" because you look at the front and it's plain and then the back's reflection is all colourful, bright and funky! It made me think of how much we all do judge books/people by their covers every day.”
