Parents at the Heart of Our Community

30 March 2017

We already know that at BISS we have a fantastic parent body who work in partnership with us to ensure that our children have a great education and feel happy and safe in our BISS community, inside and outside of school.

And we know that our parents don’t just support the children but also work really hard to create a supportive parent community, helping each other to enjoy and settle into life in Shanghai and become part of the BISS Pride. But events over the last few weeks really showcase this parent-school partnership at their very best and are a great reminder that when parents and schools work together to build a strong sense of community, everyone benefits.

A highlight of the annual school calendar for the children is the International Food Fair and yet again, the feast that was provided by parents for students was truly incredible. The children (from Pre-nursery to IB) were faced with a banquet of tasty delicacies from around the world and were very excited to pile their plates high and munch their way through delicious sweet and savoury foods.  The generosity of our parent body to contribute so much delicious food, and to take the time and effort to make these days magical for the children, is to be highly commended. We thank you so much for your contribution and support in creating wonderful experiences and helping strengthen our community spirit.

The International Food Evening a few weeks ago was also a fantastic evening. Our multicultural community came together for an amazing evening that touched all the senses – incredible smells and tastes, great music and dancing, spectacular country banquet tables and great social interaction and fun. A great evening was had by all and there were certainly a few headaches the next day!

We know that parent engagement is a vital part of a truly successful school and that children learn best when parents are meaningfully partners in their children’s education. It is wonderful therefore to reflect back on this busy term and see the many ways that we are building this community spirit and parental engagement here at BISS; the international food fairs, parent workshops, learning showcases, Parent-Teacher conferences, parent-exchange sessions, productions and concerts, parent forums, PTA events and on-going support, not to mention the many parents who contribute on a regular basis to support reading, classroom activities or sports. There is so much going on and we are grateful for your continued support and partnership.

We are always looking at ways to improve our warm welcome for parents and visitors and so plans are underway for the creation of our very own BISS Coffee shop. We are currently working with some PTA representatives and Café Du Village, to design and plan for a quality coffee shop that we hope will become a central hub for parents; a place where they can meet and chat after the school run, a place to hang out before attending workshops or events, a place to relax while your children are taking part in ECA’s or weekend sports events, place that builds community spirit. We plan to open in August 2017 so you will have to wait a little for the aroma of coffee to be a regular feature of your school day, but we will keep you updated as we finalise the plans.

As another term comes to an end, we can collectively be proud of what has been achieved over the last few months. Our children are having a high quality education, supported by dedicated teachers and engaged parents. They are growing as learners and internationally minded young people and should be praised for their efforts. With a holiday week ahead, we hope that you enjoy your family time and change of pace away from school routines. Our older students have exams looming and so will inevitably be using some of their week to study but they also deserve some relaxation time to charge their batteries before the challenges ahead.

Thanks for your continued support, partnership and commitment to the BISS Community.
