ELITE ATHLETE | PERFORMANCE COACH | P.E. TEACHER

I recently had a great conversation with a colleague after a sports education lesson with our Year 11 student athletes. During our debrief, she shared her experience of feeling the energy and presence of a player she "just happened" to watch during a netball competition in Suzhou, China. When a player from a different team stepped onto the court to take the center position, she sensed something extraordinary. As soon as the referee blew the whistle and the ball left the player’s hands, she instantly recognized that this athlete had the X-Factor!

This blog explores the mystical and ever-elusive concept of the X-Factor.

What is the X-Factor?

The X-Factor is an elusive quality or trait that makes someone or something exceptional or uniquely appealing. It refers to an intangible element that sets an individual apart, contributing to their success or ability to captivate an audience. This concept applies across various contexts, including the performing arts, sports, and personal achievements, signifying that special something that cannot easily be defined or replicated.

In our previous discussion, my colleague noted that the player was four years younger than her age-group championship competitors. Did she simply outperform her peers, showcasing her skill set, or did the age difference significantly highlight her talent? Perhaps it was a combination of both that contributed to her possessing the X-Factor. Could this X-Factor be an infectious energy within an individual, much like a contagious laugh that fills a room, leaving everyone laughing without knowing the joke?

According to ChatGPT, the X-Factor can manifest in various forms, such as:

Charisma: A magnetic presence that draws people in and inspires them.

Passion: An unwavering dedication to one's craft that energises both the individual and those around them.

Resilience: The ability to bounce back from setbacks, demonstrating determination and grit.

Creativity: A unique approach to problem-solving or expression that brings fresh ideas and perspectives.

Emotional Intelligence: The capacity to understand and connect with others, enhancing teamwork and collaboration.

All of these qualities can be expressed in different ways through sports. In my opinion, the X-Factor doesn’t necessarily reflect an individual's skill set. The best athletes on the track, pitch, court, or in the boardroom do not always possess the X-Factor. Perhaps it is a more spiritual, next-level personality trait that exists beyond the constructs of logic.

The Cultural X Factor: Michael Jordan vs. LeBron James

When asking the question of who possesses the X-Factor—Michael Jordan or LeBron James—it’s important to recognise that the answers may vary significantly depending on when a person was born. Being considerably older than the students in our school, my connection to the X-Factor resonates more with Michael Jordan. I grew up in a culture without social media and as a child, I had only four channels to choose from on TV. Additionally, the realm of high-performance sports lacked the depth of knowledge and resources that we have today.

In contrast, LeBron James represents a different sports culture. Today’s athletes benefit from a wide array of social media platforms, advanced technology, and the integration of artificial intelligence. Furthermore, contemporary sports are deeply informed by extensive scientific research, both in sports performance and education. As a result, the concept of the X-Factor resonates differently for each athlete, reflecting the distinct contexts in which they have thrived.

From my perspective, both athletes possess the X-Factor; however, I believe Michael Jordan embodies a more organic version of this mythical trait. Without the benefit of today’s extensive scientific research, Jordan relied more on instinct and intuition to find his path to success. In contrast, LeBron James represents a different approach, where the nature of basketball statistics clearly illustrates his superiority as an athlete.

I am also open to understanding how many of my students believe that LeBron James possesses the X-Factor over Michael Jordan. My students and I were born in different cultures, yet we each believe certain athletes hold the X-Factor based on our childhood experiences. This highlights that the X-Factor is, indeed, partially in the eye of the beholder!

As I reflect further on the concept of the X-Factor, I have spoken with several colleagues and student parents to gather their opinions for this blog. During an enlightening conversation with parent Julie Stoyles and Andrew Lancaster, the principal of BISS, we discussed various elements of this topic while welcoming primary students to campus to start their day. As I collected my coffee from our BISS Chatter Box café, Julie offered further insight into our conversation. She said, “We all have the X-Factor in different ways, don’t we?” She hit the nail on the head! We are all unique and, deep down, possess the X-Factor. The most important thing we must do as educators is to assist our students in reaching their full potential — or in other words, their X-Factor!
