SCHOOL UPDATE Posted Tuesday 25 February 2020

Dear Parents

Once again, I would like to thank you all for your incredible support during these difficult circumstances. Your feedback on our e-learning programme has been very useful in helping to guide our teachers with setting high-quality work and activities for our students. Your understanding and cooperation is very much appreciated at a time when many of us are not in our own homes with our usual resources at hand.

We continue to work with the local authorities, both in terms of plans for when we re-open the school to fulfilling their requests with regard to the location of our families and staff. Thank you for completing the necessary documents as emailed to you by our admin team. It is essential that we continue to fulfil our obligations in order to be able to open the school when we are given permission to do so.

As yet, I would like to reiterate that we do not have a confirmed date for re-opening. We will only be allowed to re-open once the Shanghai Education Committee give us the permission to do so. However, once we do receive confirmation, I will inform the school community immediately.

I understand that there are challenges for our students in Years 11 and 13, as they work towards their final IGCSE and IB examinations. For those students and parents, please be assured that our teachers are working hard to support them in these challenging times. The school remains in regular contact with the UK examination boards and IBO to request their consideration for our students.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: MUNICIPAL EDUCATION ANNOUNCEMENT AND E-LEARNING Posted Tuesday 18 February 2020

Dear Parents

First of all, I would like to thank you all for your incredible support during these difficult circumstances.

Our teachers have been doing a superb job of providing high-quality work and activities for our students to ensure teaching and learning is of the highest standard.

I’d also like to say a big thanks to our administrative and support teams who have been working incredibly hard to offer support and continued communication throughout this whole period。

Working together with our school community, we are looking forward to the time when we will be able to recommence our on-campus learning. As such, I wanted to share with you three important updates:

E-LEARNING WILL CONTINUE IN MARCH

Today, the Municipal Education Commission announced that the school campus must remain closed from 2 March 2020 and e-learning should continue during this time. With this in mind, we will continue with our provision to support your child. We will receive notification when we are allowed to resume use of the campus.

TEACHERS RETURNING TO WORK – 3 WEEKS’ NOTICE

While many teachers have remained within China, we are aware that a number of teachers have travelled overseas and need some time to make arrangements to return, and to meet the potential self-quarantine requirements which the government may request.

I wanted to confirm that we will give colleagues three weeks’ notice of any opening date. Whilst we can’t be more specific at this time regarding exactly when this will be, this will allow one week to arrange travel and an additional two weeks to meet the 14 day requirement which is required for all members of our community.

When the time comes, we will be ready, willing and able to ensure our schools are open and welcoming our students back.  Until then, high quality e-learning will continue and thank you for your help in making it so successful.

LEARNING TIME

I’d also like to set out the ways in which we will look to make up any lost learning time, if required. I want you to know that, whilst these aren’t confirmed, it will show you the range of options we have at our disposal.  Assuming a start date of mid-March we will:

- Cancel the current holiday from 2 – 6 April 2020 and these will become normal working days.

- We will provide Year 11 and Year 13 students with additional lessons during a number of Saturdays, which will be five hours in length and delivered on the following days:

  • Sat 21 March
  • Sat 28 March
  • Sat 4 April
  • Sat 11 April
  • Sat 18 April
  • Sat 25 April

- Additionally, we will run one extra school day on a Saturday in May or June, for all students at the school.  It will be either 16 May, 23 May or 13 June.

- Activities Week will be cancelled and this will be a ‘normal’ school week for all of the students at the school.  In making this decision, we have considered the health and wellbeing of our students and staff, the time that can be made up elsewhere in the curriculum and responsiveness to parental feedback.

- Secondary Internal Exams at the end of May will be cancelled, to reduce stress and anxiety levels amongst students and families.

- ECA lessons will run on a normal programme until 4:30pm. Only BISS teachers and students will be able to deliver or participate in these activities respectively.

- The BISCAP Programme will not take place.

- There is a possibility that we will offer EYFS children places at our BISS Summer School for the first week of the programme.

- We will hold on-campus sporting events to replace the competitions that have been cancelled.

I do hope that this helps to provide you with some clarity at a time when there is a lot of information being sent through different media that can be confusing.  Of course, this is still an evolving situation and things could change again – if they do – I will of course provide you with an update.

Needless to say, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: WELLBEING AND STAYING HEALTHY Posted Tuesday 11 February 2020

I hope that this message finds you safe and well wherever in the world you may be. We find ourselves in an unprecedented situation, spread across the globe without our regular routines in place. It is with this in mind, that I wanted to get in touch with you, to reassure you that many of us (if not all of us) are feeling a little off-balance in dealing with the situation in which we find ourselves. In recent days, I have come across many valuable pieces of advice to support families in this uncertain time; whether that is managing the day-to-day living arrangements to helping children navigate the newness of remote learning and the added pressure that brings to family life.

Please take a few moments to read through the ‘hints and tips’ below, which may offer some reassurance and guidance as to how we can help each other during this time.

How to support your child with remote learning:

  • Follow a schedule each day during the week to complete the activities – preferably in line with the school timetable.
  • Use a calendar so that your child can mark off when they have completed assignments/daily tasks.
  • Have a designated study space.
  • For younger children, give them the opportunity to submit their own assignments and read the responses from their teachers
  • If a task becomes overwhelming, stop and go back to it later. If it becomes unmanageable, simply leave it and your child can discuss it with their teacher on the return to school.
  • Complete homework on the day it is assigned. Don’t leave it to the deadline, otherwise there will be multiple assignments to complete and your child could feel overwhelmed.
  • Allow your child to take regular breaks; this includes moving about and moving to a different space.
  • Use an online video exercise session to allow the opportunity for some exercise.
  • Particularly for younger children, set up a reward system for completed tasks; for example, treats, family time (perhaps playing a board game), or a special weekend activity.

How to work as a family to make the most of this time:

  • Cook together – choose some new recipes and get your child involved.
  • Play board games as a family – choose a new one every day.
  • Share the household chores – a good opportunity to teach your child some of the basics.
  • De-clutter and tidy up – playrooms, bedrooms, basements!
  • Read those books that you’ve meaning to.
  • Take this time to brush up on your Mandarin.

This time can lead to uncertainty and anxiety for many of our community, old and young. Too much exposure to the media and too little time with family and friends may contribute further. It is important that we reassure our children that this current situation will not last forever and that life will return to normal. Again, I would like to share with you some tips I have read in recent days about how to help your family cope at this time.

  • Limit media and social media use – stick to reliable channels of information.
  • Follow official guidance on hygiene and share this with your child – this will help them feel secure.
  • Having routines and schedules as described above will allow for some normality at home.
  • Try to get outside for some fresh air.
  • Stay in touch with family and friends – they are the best support network.
  • Be honest with your child – allow them to express their concerns and talk through what is happening.
  • Reassure your child that whilst the current situation is uncertain, your family is secure.

If there is any way in which you feel our pastoral teams can support you and your family at this time, then please contact the Heads of School who will be able to direct you. In the meantime, I wish you all the best and very much look forward to seeing you all again on Monday 2 March.

We have received a further reminder from the Shanghai Education Council (SEC) asking our parents to inform us of their travel arrangements

The information can be captured once but if you then change your travel arrangements it must be updated, and you must continue to do so until your child returns to school.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: A MESSAGE FROM NORD ANGLIA EDUCATION Posted Thursday 6 February 2020

Given the rapidly changing situation regarding the Coronavirus outbreak in China, we want to outline our approach to ensuring your child’s education is disrupted as little as possible, while keeping our school communities safe.

Despite a longer duration of school closure than originally anticipated, the provision of e-learning will continue at our school and our staff and teachers are committed to ensuring this is of the highest quality and matches the normal curriculum as closely as possible. We are also encouraging students to stay connected to their school network through Global Campus.

Our guidance will always follow the recommendations and requirements of all relevant government bodies and health authorities. Please look out for any communications from our school with the latest updates.

Please click here to view an FAQ document (PDF), which we hope provides guidance and reassurances. You may also view this information on our school website.

Thank you for your support and understanding and please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE Posted Tuesday 28 January 2020

Dear Parents

Following my email yesterday about our plans to provide e-learning opportunities for our students, I am  writing to you today about your own travels in January and February.

Due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, we have been asked to submit information to the Minhang Education Commission (by the Shanghai Education Committee), for families that have travelled to or from Hubei province recently, or who were in contact with visitors from this region.

Therefore, if you meet this criteria, I would be grateful if you can complete the table below with details and send the information in an email to this email address.  This will help in providing the authorities with the information needed to help to manage the outbreak as effectively as possible.

You do not need to send an email if it does not apply to you, your family or visitors.

Thank you for your continuing help and support.

Best wishes

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE Posted Monday 27 January 2020

Dear Parents

I would like to bring you up-to-date on school plans and the latest information available to us as we respond to the requirements of the Shanghai Education Committee (SEC).

At present, the school is set to re-open to all year groups on Monday 17 February 2020.

From Monday 10 February until Friday 14 February, staff will be providing e-learning opportunities and work for students to support their continued learning.  There will doubtless be challenges involved, but we are keen to focus upon the learning of students as a priority.  We expect students to participate and complete the learning tasks set and welcome your support in helping your child to engage in them.

For primary pupils, teachers will communicate activities using SeeSaw, so please look out for these on your SeeSaw App.  Secondary students will receive their work via ODIN email each day from 9:00am.

For Year 13 and Year 11 students, we will make contact with the IBO and exam boards so that they are aware of the circumstances and they will work with us should we need to change deadlines.  Please be assured our skilled and experienced team will ensure your child is fully prepared  and remains on track for their examinations this summer.

We will also need to cancel some trips out of the school and some events at the school.  We will provide details of these in the weeks ahead, but at this stage, I can confirm that Nord Anglia Regional Events, including our three STEAM Festivals (Beijing & Puxi), Volleyball (Beijing), Global Games (NAIS Pudong); Leadership & Mathematics Festival (Beijing) and the Orchestral & MFL Olympiad (Guangzhou) will all be cancelled.  External companies such as BISCAP providers which use school premises will not be able to do so during the week beginning Monday 17 February, so these will not run.  The campus will be closed to the school community during this time.

Our operational team will be working to ensure that additional deep cleaning of the school campus takes place so that we are fully prepared to accept students when the school re-opens.

Thank you for your patience and support during this time and I do wish you and your family a happy and healthy Chinese New Year.

Best wishes

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep you updated as frequently as possible.

On Monday we will issue further information regarding all practical arrangements.

NORD ANGLIA SCHOOLS ANNOUNCEMENT Posted 23 January 2020

You will be aware that China is currently experiencing an outbreak of a new strain of Corona virus. The symptoms of this virus initially resemble flu. It has been shown to spread from person to person and can be very serious, especially in the very young, very old, or those with weakened immune systems.

I am writing to inform you of the steps we will be taking to minimise the risks to our school communities.

  • All of our schools are increasing cleaning routines. Since the main mechanism of spread for the virus seems to be through infected surfaces (such as door handles etc.) we will be disinfecting the classrooms twice per day.
  • UV lamps will be in place in Early Years’ class rooms over night to ensure any viruses are destroyed.
  • We will require children who are ill, for any reason, to remain at home. We cannot quickly distinguish between a fever for other reasons and one that might indicate the virus. Children who arrive at school with a fever will be sent home.
  • We will be requiring temperature checks for children getting onto the bus. Any child with a fever will not be permitted to board the bus and will need to return home. There will be no exceptions to this as the safety of all children must be our chief concern.
  • During the period of increased risk, we will likely remove some communal play items from playgrounds and prevent children sharing play equipment. Though this might mean playtimes are somewhat restricted for a time it is an important step.
  • We will instruct all children on methods to avoid infection, handwashing, not sharing food etc. These instructions will be given by their teachers/tutors at an age appropriate level.
  • Some educational visits might be cancelled. This might include sporting fixtures. We would ask for your understanding on this matter.
  • We will work closely with the Government Health Authorities and will receive daily updates from them.
  • We would ask parents to refrain from risky travel and behaviour during the holiday period. Although the virus has spread it is still concentrated in the Wuhan area of China. Animal markets and other high risk areas should be avoided. If you are planning a trip to Wuhan, please do make contact with the school and make us aware of the details of your visit.
  • We suggest you also speak with your Ayi and Driver to ascertain if they intend to travel to Wuhan during the festival period and take precautions if this is the case.

Best wishes
