    Having studied History at King’s College London, Rebecca went on to complete her teacher training at the London Institute of Education. She then worked in several of the top state schools in London, including Latymer Grammar School, Fortismere and the London Oratory School. Rebecca enjoys working at BISS Puxi and feels it is an exciting place to work, with great staff and pupils.

    Having moved to China four and half years ago, initially for her husband’s job, Emma was keen to return to teaching following the smooth transition for her own children into BISS. Since then, she has been very fortunate to have had many new opportunities, including the challenge of learning a new language, teaching intensive English lessons and working with children from many different cultures at BISS Puxi. Emma teaches Geography, History and EAL at BISS.

    William Walker

    William graduated from the University of Edinburgh, UK, in 2006 with a Master's Degree in Classics and Medieval History. After graduating, he trained to become an English language specialist before taking on a position in Spain, where as well as gaining experience teaching a wide range of ages and levels, he also met his future wife in a Spanish class. Following her back to her hometown of Shanghai William worked at a well-respected Chinese university for over three years, initially as an ESL teacher and later as Director of Studies.

    Edward graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2009 with a Master's Degree in Modern History. After a year spent making his way across Russia, Mongolia, China, Nepal and India by train, he embarked on a teaching career in East London. Through the Teach First programme, Edward completed a PGCE at Canterbury Christchurch University whilst teaching History and Government and Politics. His three years in London gave him a strong grounding in teaching EAL students, an appreciation of internationalism in education and the belief that all students - regardless of circumstance - have the ability flourish academically.

    Ruslan Ekkel

    Ruslan graduated from Cardiff University with a BA (Hons) in English Literature, but his passion for film led him into various aspects of the media before he became a teacher. He worked briefly at Sky News and MTV Europe before spending several years as an Assistant Editor on films such as The Mummy Returns, Troy and 007: The World Is Not Enough.

    Cliodhna has a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and Archaeology from the National University of Ireland, Galway. She then completed her PGCE through the University of Cumbria and spent six years teaching in Colchester, Essex at Colchester County High School for Girls, a selective state grammar school.

    Mary qualified as a teacher in 2008 and most of her experience to date has been in secondary schools in the UK. Before moving to Shanghai in August 2017, she spent seven years in an independent girls’ boarding school in the south of England where she held a succession of pastoral and residential roles including Housemistress and Head of Year. She has also worked in Lancashire and West Yorkshire. Having completed a BA in Sociology at Queen’s University, Belfast in 2002, she returned to education to pursue a PGCE in Secondary Geography at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster, UK, following three years spent working in financial services. In 2015 she completed an MA in Irish Studies at St. Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, which allowed her to conduct her own research into migration – an area of Geography she is passionate about. 

    Mary has spent the last three years working at another school in Shanghai and has particularly enjoyed teaching the modern content of the IBDP Geography course. She prides herself on the rapport she builds with students and aims to foster a positive and safe classroom environment, where students feel able take academic risks without fear of getting things wrong.

    Geraldine graduated from the University of Southampton with a PGCE and went on to teach in an outstanding school in the city. It was there where she developed her passion for teaching Business Studies as well as teaching ICT. Here she was professionally encouraged and challenged to develop her own pedagogy and gain experience in teaching, learning and developing resources.
