TANZANIA EXPERIENCE 2025

Some short reflections from the group leaders of Tanzania Residential Trip.

Camila Giraldo (ISM Spanish teacher)

I truly loved experiencing this trip to Tanzania alongside the students and sharing so many meaningful moments and emotions with them. Their generosity and the genuine care they showed for the service project were incredibly inspiring, and it was amazing to see how committed they were to making a difference.

I also loved being on a safari for the first time—seeing such beautiful animals in their natural habitat was unforgettable and reminded me of how incredibly beautiful our world is. This trip left me feeling deeply grateful, especially after witnessing the living conditions of some of the people we met, which gave me a new perspective on everything I have.

At the same time, I feel hopeful about the future, knowing that students like ours will have such a positive impact on the world.

Nicholas Leonard (ISM English teacher)

Once I registered my interest for the Tanzania trip I didn’t give it much more thought. I love to travel and experience new cultures and since I’d never been to Africa, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to begin my explorations of that exciting continent.

When I was accepted onto the trip, and the reality of how difficult certain aspects of it would be sunk in, I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t a tad apprehensive. How long will I go without showering? Will they have Wifi? Are the snakes poisonous? How big are the spiders? These thoughts, and many more, piled up in my head in the weeks running up to the flight, and I am afraid to say they were present right up until our departure.

However, I can honestly say that I think this trip will go down as one of the most memorable of my life. I was awed by the vast landscapes, amazed by the majestic wildlife, moved by the tragic stories of the villagers, inspired by the dedication of the project workers, exhilarated by the hard work of our students, and humbled by the overwhelming spirit and stoicism of the Tanzanian people.

The Tanzania expedition is certainly not for the fainthearted, and the experience will remain in my heart forever.
