BSY's Little Chefs

BSY's youngest students take to cooking & food technology to develop their core curriculum skills...

In our new topic we are developing cooking/food technology skills with the children, as its such a great way to cover a whole host of the EYFS curriculum. Communication and language skills are inherent to the collaboration required in cooking; sharing materials and following recipes and instructions, which also bring to life the importance of everyday literacy for the children using cookery books, recipe cards or even shopping lists. The children have a chance to explore mathematical concepts such as capacity, halving and sharing as well as enhancing understanding of scientific concepts e.g changing state. The children have started off this term with sandwich making, a great activity for developing fine motor skills of cutting and spreading and of course including the need to wash up! Whilst encouraging vocabulary surrounding their understanding of the world - another curriculum area.
