BSY proudly celebrates Book Week annually as literacy is at the heart of education. Reading nurtures language, imagination, creativity, and confidence, and while technology continues to shape our world, the joy of books remains timeless. Book Week is an opportunity to remind students that reading is not only essential for learning but also exciting, inspiring, and fun.

Last week was marked Book Week 2026 for BSY as commemoration of World Book Day. This year’s theme, “Reading for Fun,” supported the International Year of Reading 2026 initiative which acts as a global movement encouraging schools and communities to promote reading as a meaningful lifelong habit, increase access to books, and inspire children to explore literature more widely.

We began the week with a vibrant Book Fair, where visiting vendors offered a wide variety of English books. It was wonderful to see students exploring different genres, discovering new authors, and sharing their favourite characters and stories with peers. “In a time when digital entertainment often dominates, it was fantastic to see them so engaged and excited about books,” said Ms. Chenjera, our Early Years Teacher.

Another highlight was the Extreme Reading Challenge, where students photographed themselves reading in creative or unusual places. From under desks to cozy playground corners, the photos captured the imagination and excitement of our learners.

On Wednesday, secondary students visited primary classrooms to read with younger learners. This whole school collaboration strengthened our sense of community and allowed older students to model positive reading habits.

On World Book Day, Thursday 5th March, students arrived dressed as their favourite book characters and proudly paraded their costumes. Awards were presented for Best Costume, Best Door Decoration, and Best Extreme Reading Picture. Congratulations to all our winners and participants for their creativity and enthusiasm.

Book Week was a fantastic celebration filled with imagination, collaboration, and a shared love of reading across the BSY community. We extend our sincere thanks to the parents and teachers who generously volunteered their time to read stories in their mother tongues, including Turkish, Portuguese, Japanese, Burmese, Mandarin, and Ndebele. This special activity celebrated the rich cultural and linguistic diversity within our BSY community. Listening to stories in different languages not only enriched the children’s storytelling experience but also deepened their appreciation of the many cultures that make our school such a vibrant and inclusive place.
