School House System

At BSY we have a flourishing house system that reflects our commitment to developing our community. The system allows the creation of cross-year communities within our wider, whole school community. The house system enables  relationships between students in different year groups and phases of the school and it also encourages friendly competition through a variety of inter-house sporting, academic and community events.

There are four houses at BSY, each represented by a different house colour:

  • Normans - red
  • Saxons - green
  • Romans - blue
  • Vikings - yellow
School houses

On entry to the school each student is allocated a house (siblings will be placed in the same house) by our admissions team. Our admissions staff aim for a balance of male and female students in each house, and also try to keep student numbers in each house even.

The House System offers an opportunity to develop student leadership through the role of House Captain. Primary and Secondary House Captains are nominated at the beginning of the year by the Student Leader Coordinator and teaching staff. With the assistance of the House and Student Leader Coordinator, the House Captains help to organise events, arrange their candidates, encourage their teams and discuss strategy.

Throughout the year students accrue points for their house in the following ways:

Marbles (Primary)

Students will earn marbles for a positive attitude to learning and our school.  Students can earn marbles for demonstrating aspects including, honesty, dedication, and kindness.

House Points (EYFS and Primary)

Students will earn house points for academic work (attainment and approaches to learning). Four house points are equivalent to one Merit in the Secondary School.

Merits (Secondary)

Students will earn merits for academic work (attainment and approaches to learning). Each merit is equivalent of four House Points in the Primary School.
