Parent Update - 15 January 2016 An update on this week's events and what's happening in the next two weeks from Parent workshops and meetings, to cheering on our Knights in Basketball!

Dear Parents,

 We want to thank you for all your comments and feedback on the introduction of an Annual Capital Levy. As you can imagine it has not been easy to hear how unhappy many of you are, but we hope that the meeting on the 27 Wednesday (at 6.30pm) with our Chief Executive of Nord Anglia Education, Mr. Andrew Fitzmaurice, will give you the opportunity to share your concerns and to have your questions addressed.

Thank you also for the many messages of support. It has been heartening to hear how happy your children are at NAIS and how much respect you have for our wonderful teachers.

 

IMPORTANT DATES

From Monday 18 January	REMINDER: ECAs and Late Buses start from this date. If you haven’t already done so, please let our Student Services team know your child will be getting home (bus@nais.hk), whether by bus or pick-up.
Monday 18 January	Ice-Hockey Taster session for Year 7-8. I’m looking forwardto seeing how our Sports Hall will be transformed into an ice rink!
Tuesday 26 January, 8.30 – 9.00am, Cafeteria	Parent Workshop: Maths – how to support your child at home. A very popular workshop last term. Led by Miss Robyn Dowding. Years 3 to 6.
Wednesday 27 January, 6.30pm, Hall	Parents’ Meeting with Mr Fitzmaurice.
Thursday 4 February, 8.30am	Year 3 Chinese New Year Assembly – Year 3 parents are invited
Thursday 4 February	Celebrating Mandarin Day – more details later.

 

Please remember to check your child’s Year Blogs on Firefly as we have lots going on in individual year groups (including the marvellous Kids Fest on 21 January for our Year 1s and 28 January for our Year 3s).

 

U12 GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Last weekend our Lady Knights fought hard against Delia School of Canada, International College School and Canadian International School. They did exceptionally well and are certainly learning with experience! Thank you to Mr Malone and our parent coaches for supporting the team.

 

NETBALL FUN TOURNAMENT

Led by our Netball coaches, the Fun Netball Tournament with teachers and parents against out Year 5/6s and Year 7/8 Knights took place on Wednesday. We all had great fun watching and cheered on our lady Knights of course! Check out the photos and video here.

 

PRIMARY ASSEMBLY – STARS OF THE WEEK & CLASS 3C PERFORMANCE

 

Congratulations to our Primary Stars of the Week chosen by their teachers for being the most ambitious in their learning. As a school we encourage our pupils to "Be Ambitious" about what they want to achieve for themselves. Our Stars are:

Year 2: Sebastien Jerga, Eric Chee, Gypsy Hignett, Frederick Cary, Esme McFee

On a wet and wintery day in Hong Kong, Class 3C put on a fabulous assembly about different weather and countries. They read out some of their wonderful poems they have been writing over the past week including acrostic, Haiku and cinaquains styles. Thank you to Mr. Stephen Holt and his class. Photos can be found here and in Firefly.
 

 SECONDARY ASSEMBLY

Our Secondary Commendation certificates for Maths were awarded to:

Congratulations to you all! 

In the Secondary assembly, Mr. Boyd talked about Tootoot which is an anti-bullying software. Tootoot allows our students to talk about bullying with our teachers. They can raise their own concerns or concerns for others, and they can do so anonymously if this is easier. Please take the time to look at this software and to have a chat with your child. You can find more details on Firefly under the 'Houses' section. Mr Boyd also discussed iPad etiquette, and why students must remember that talking and communicating directly to their peers and people around them is just as important (more important!) than starting at a small screen!

 

PICK-UP CARDS

You should now have your child's ‘pick-up’ card which we would like to use from Monday 18 January. You can read more about this important initiative to keep our children safe at this Firefly link.

 

LOCK-DOWN

This week we held a successful Fire Drill with all our children making their way safely to the safety area. None of our teachers or students knew we’d be having the Fire Drill so their impressive and safe evacuation was doubly impressive. Next week we will be holding another important safety drill; a whole school ‘Lock Down’. This is a simulation of an intruder coming into the school. It involves students being held safely in their classrooms with their teachers and TLAs with doors locked and barricaded. Our teachers will be talking about the importance of the Lock Down with our children before it takes place to ensure that they are all calm and ready.

 

ISSF U12 BOYS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

Finally, good luck to our Basketball Knights for tomorrow’s Tournament against HKIS and Victoria Shanghai Academy. They are playing at HKIS at 11am if you want to go along and cheer!
