Remembrance Day
Across the world, you may have seen that schools and communities came together to mark Remembrance Sunday.
Today at NAIS Hong Kong, our great student leaders, supported by Mr. Cadman, led a wonderful assembly for our whole school. In it, they shared why we mark Remembrance Day, how it is acknowledged, what it means to us, and what we learn from it.
Our House Captains, Ethan L, Emily S (Sandringham) Jocelyn W, Peony C (Balmoral) Sanvi M, Oran D (Caernarfon) and Coco X, Jun W (Windsor) shared how Remembrance Day is represented in Hong Kong. We heard stories of Hong Kong’s history, local memorials in Sai Kung, poems and readings from John McCrae and finally, the importance of the wreath laying ceremony at the Cenotaph in Central.
In the buildup to the assembly, our Deputy House Captains, Isabelle A (Windsor), Emma A (Caernarfon), Wujoon K (Sandringham) and Mia L (Balmoral) were collecting donations by selling poppies around the school. Importantly, they could also share the story behind the poppies with children and staff.
The assembly was the best Remembrance Day assembly that I have been privileged to see over the years. It was moving, poignant and shared context for our school community. Our student leaders reminded us of the importance of standing up for what is right, caring for others, and working together for peace, kindness and compassion every day.
Within Art lessons, Ms. Grevis-James and Ms. Claxton continue to inspire our children to connect learning across the curriculum. In this case, moved by the work of Paul Cummins, who created an installation of 888,246 clay poppies at the Tower of London, our Year 6 children worked on poppy sculptures that have been celebrated in our school reception area.
Our start to this week is important as it marks one in which we can hope to learn from the past and build a better future.
