Dear parents,

Supporting Children's Mental Health and Wellbeing

World Mental Health Day was on 10th October 2026, and while we marked the day with an assembly to raise awareness for our children, our commitment to supporting our children is grounded in daily interactions. A child's mental health is just as important as their physical health. Positive wellbeing helps children build strong relationships, engage confidently in learning, develop resilience and navigate life's challenges with greater success. The World Health Organization (WHO) highlights that childhood and adolescence are critical periods for developing emotional wellbeing, coping skills, healthy habits and positive social connections.

As parents, one of the most effective ways to support mental health is through connection. Making time for meaningful conversations, sharing family routines and listening without judgement helps children feel safe, valued and understood. Even a few minutes of uninterrupted attention each day can have a significant impact. Often starting sentences with the words ‘Talk’ ‘Explain’ ‘Describe’ (TED), place children at the centre of the discussion and often phrases such as ‘help me to understand’ or ‘say more about that’, can help to build these connections.

At school, we recognise the importance of proactively supporting wellbeing. This morning, Mr. Holt led a Parent Workshop all about our Pastoral Pathways. He shared research from Komodo Wellbeing that emphasises the value of student voice, self-reflection and early identification of concerns so support can be provided before challenges become more significant.

Simple habits such as maintaining healthy sleep routines, encouraging physical activity, balancing commitments with downtime and creating opportunities for children to talk about their feelings all contribute to positive mental health. The WHO also identifies supportive family and school environments as key protective factors for children's wellbeing.

Together, through strong home-school partnerships, we can help every child develop the confidence, resilience and self-awareness they need to flourish both now and in the future.
