Dear Parents,

STEAM and Metacognition as catalysts for change

As educators, we are committed to preparing children not only with knowledge, but with the skills and mindsets that will enable them to thrive in an increasingly complex world.

Two of the strongest indicators of future opportunity and success are Science Technology Engineering Art and Mathematical (STEAM) thinking and Metacognition.

We know there is much research that tells STEAM encourages children to think creatively, collaborate effectively, solve authentic problems and make meaningful connections across disciplines. Through inquiry, innovation and experimentation, children learn to embrace challenges, persevere through setbacks and see multiple pathways to success.

This week, we hope that children across school will be coming home talking about their STEAM Week and we would encourage discussions at home about it. As a family, consider talking about STEAM beyond the classroom, where can it be seen in the wider world, what careers are there that demand these skills.

Equally important is Metacognition, often described as thinking about thinking. It is the ability to understand how we learn best, reflect on our approaches and adapt our strategies when faced with new challenges. Published research from our partnership with Boston College and Nord Anglia Education, NAE, suggests that children become more confident learners, creative problem-solvers and independent thinkers. A two-year global research project conducted with NAE & Boston College, involving more than 12,000 students, found that 85% of students believed developing metacognitive skills helped them unlock their strengths and learning potential, while over 70% reported improvements in independence and social skills.

This research reinforces what we see every day in our classrooms: when children are encouraged to reflect on their thinking, evaluate their learning strategies and set meaningful goals, they become more resilient, adaptable and engaged learners. As artificial intelligence continues to transform the world around us, the ability to think critically, question deeply and learn independently becomes even more valuable.

We recognise metacognition as a "learning superpower" because it develops the human capabilities that technology cannot easily replicate.

Across our school, we continue to nurture these important skills through hands-on learning, collaborative projects, reflection opportunities and authentic problem-solving experiences. By developing both STEAM thinking and metacognition, we are empowering our children to become curious, reflective and innovative learners who are ready to embrace the opportunities of the future with confidence and purpose.

Looking ahead to STEAM Week

Get ready for an exciting week of creativity, innovation and problem-solving as we celebrate STEAM Week from Monday 5th October to Friday 9th October! This year’s theme, inspired by the MIT Challenge, is Designing Solutions for Climate Change. All information can be found on Firefly: https://naishk.fireflycloud.asia/2026-27.

Throughout the week, pupils will engage in hands-on activities that combine Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to explore real-world environmental challenges. Working collaboratively, children will investigate the impacts of climate change, develop innovative ideas, and design practical solutions that could help create a more sustainable future. We look forward to seeing our young innovators think critically, take creative risks, and showcase their ingenuity as they tackle one of the most important challenges facing our world today.
