Effective Home School Partnership

02 september 2015

At BISS Puxi we pride ourselves on ensuring that we extend a warm welcome to all members of our school community; students, families and staff. Our Orientation Days and Meet and Greet Evenings have proved yet again to be excellent ways to start the new school year, supporting new and returning families to get familiar with how we work here at school and helping all students to get off to a positive start.

The warm welcoming process for new parents continues on the 19 September with all parents invited to join us for the much loved PTA Welcome Back Party – a great event for everyone to have some fun and socialise.

This support will also continue throughout the coming weeks and beyond, with a range of targeted events that will help us to build the positive home-school partnerships that we know are required to optimise children’s learning. These events build trust and understanding, allow the staff to get to know as much as possible about the children and families in our care, and establish a good basis for partnership over the course of the year. There are a variety of information giving events and workshops scheduled to assist parents in supporting their children in their learning across the age range from Early Years Cubs to IB Academy and you will have these events flagged to you on the school website and through letters and communication books.

We do believe that face to face meetings are by far the best way for us to build these essential partnerships but there are some other very important communication media options available to you to help you stay in touch with what is going on at school. The school’s website, and in particular the Parent Essentials, is designed to help you access important information about school life. The calendar lists all of the events taking place each day and throughout the year, while the blog provides regular updates on all of the exciting experiences that your children are enjoying at BISS Puxi and beyond. Primary parents can access the weekly Class News each Friday which will summarise key learning objectives and information for the following week, while secondary parents get a daily email from ODIN giving a brief summary of the day’s learning and homework tasks. Another very important source of information is the weekly newsletter which pulls together the week’s events and this is sent out on a Thursday, via a subscription email service. You can sign up for the newsletter by clicking here.

You can, of course email staff directly and they will respond as a soon as they can. Please do remember, however, that they spend most of their day in class engaged with students in learning and teaching and so in most instances they cannot respond immediately. Teachers will always respond to you within 24 hours but if you need to communicate with us about an urgent matter, the best route is normally via our receptionists in primary and secondary. Violet is our receptionist in primary and can be contacted at  v-zhu@bisspuxi.com or extension 1500 and for secondary, you can contact extension 1800 who will deal with your call or find the right person to respond to your enquiry.

Finally on the subject of communication, please call reception if your son/daughter will be absent from school. This speeds up our checking process and ensures that we can spot as quickly as possible if someone has not made it to school. For this reason please also do your utmost to keep your contact details on our system up to date so that we can keep you in touch we all that is going on at school.

Now that we are up and running for the new school year, we are keen for people to come forward if you wish to contribute to the life of the school. Our school community is full of highly skilled and educated people and we are always happy to harness your skills. If you feel you can contribute something please let us know and we will do our very best to accommodate you and get you involved. Parental involvement can take many forms such as; qualified teachers providing teacher cover, medical practitioners or nurses supporting in the clinic, offering work experience placements or giving talks to students or supporting children’s reading. You may also want to work in support of the PTA or within our community service programme.

We are very excited about the school year ahead as we work together as a school community to ensure the very best experiences and learning outcomes for our children. Thanks in advance for all your support and engagement.
