Week Beginning 23 May 2016

Next year: As the end of year is approaching we are already beginning planning for the new classes next year. However, this is a long and complicated process. Please be aware that information about new classes and teachers will not be available for several weeks, but we do aim to be able to share this with you before the end of term. We aim to provide stability in moving complete classes to the next year group whenever possible. When classes have to be altered we use our detailed knowledge of the children and consider carefully friendships, gender and nationality. As decisions are based on the number of children in each year group, please help us by confirming your intentions for next year to , if you have not already done so. Thank you for your patience and support.

  • Please ensure your child has a named sunhat to wear at school for the summer term.
  • Year 1 are getting ready to begin an exciting Science/Literacy project. We would therefore be very grateful if you could send in any junk modeling resources which you may have at home. We ask that no glass or sharp objects such as tins be sent into school. Thank you.
  • 1I would like to invite friends and family to their class assembly in Stage One on Monday 23 May beginning promptly at 2:40.

LITERACY & Themed Learning (Science Week)

This week is Science week and the children will be learning about the famous scientist, Charles Darwin. The children will learn about the wonderful animals discovered on the Galapagos Island and how animals adapt and evolve.  They will create their very own evolved creature using recycled materials and write a non-fiction fact file about their creature in Literacy.

Puffer Fish- Phase 6- The Puffer Fish phonics group will be continuing to focus on the use of suffixes. This week we will focus on adding  ‘less’ to the end of words. We will focus on the vocabulary- hopeless, timeless, limitless, effortless and selfless.

Starfish – Phase 5 - This week the children will learn the alternative pronunciation of the letter ‘g’. They will learn to read words using alternative pronunciations of ‘g’ such as: gently, magician, ginger, danger, energy. We will also practise reading polysyllabic words.

Jelly Fish- Phase 4 – Our sessions continue  to consist of a strong spelling focus. Children are encouraged to use learned sounds from Phase 3 to spell with independence, as well as repeating words to themselves so that they can hear the sounds being created.

Stingray – The Stingrays will learn alternative pronunciations of ‘c’ as in city, success and cell as well as the alternative pronunciations of ‘g’as in gem, magic and ginger. We will also practise spelling magic, danger, successful, December and central.

Octopus - This week in the Octopus phonics group we are applying our phonics skills into writing and reading longer sentences. We are looking at our tricky words and remembering how to spell these more challenging words!

Sharks – This week Sharks will be learning ‘ow’ and ‘ur’ , in words such as cow, now, owl and turn, urn.

In Maths this week we will be practising using a ruler to measure in cm. We will first estimate and then measure a variety of different pictures and items. We will record our measurements and will then move onto completing practical and word problems linked to different lengths and heights.

Maths- measurements, length, height, biggest, smallest, shortest, tallest, longest, widest, ruler, cm, estimate.

De kinderen van year 1 zijn deze week gestart met het ontwerpen van hun superhelden alter ego.  Ze bedenken hun persoonlijke superkrachten en een passende naam.  Daar hoort natuurlijk een geweldig superpak bij.  Heeft u thuis een oude gekleurde (volwassenen) T-shirt waar lustig in geknipt mag worden?  We maken er een heldhaftige cape van!
