Week Beginning 9 May 2016

On Tuesday 10 May, Year 1 will be going on an exciting educational visit to Minhang Cultural Park. This visit is connected to our Themed Learning unit, Plants and Insects. Please ensure you child has a named sunhat and good walking shoes.

LITERACY

This week in Literacy we will be reading the Fiction text- ‘Mad about Minibeasts’ written by Giles Andreae. We will be discussing the descriptive language and rhyming words. Children will then focus on using adjectives and interesting vocabulary when writing about their own mini-beast or insect. We will also be writing recounts about our exciting trip to the park.

PHONICS

Puffer Fish- Phase 6- The Puffer Fish phonics group will be continuing to focus on the use of suffixes. This week we will focus on adding  ‘est’ to the end of words. We will focus on the vocabulary- biggest, smallest, funniest, cutest, tallest, quickest and brightest.

Starfish – Phase 5 - This week the children will learn the alternative pronunciation of the letter ‘o’. They will learn to read polysyllabic words using alternative pronunciations of ‘o’ such as: golden, soldier, mostly, focusing. We will also practise reading and spelling the High Frequency Words: because and who.

Jelly Fish- Phase 4 – This week we will continue to use sounds and blending to help us spell. These words follow no specific spelling pattern but the children should now be using their knowledge of Phase 2 & 3 sounds to increase their spelling accuracy. The words we are focussing on include; twin, sniff, plum, swim, brown.

Stingray – This week the Stingrays will begin learning some split digraphs such as i_e, o_e and u_e.  We will practice reading  words like, time, stone, home, rule and flute as well as learn the spellings money monkey and chimney.

Octopus  - Beginning Phase 4 –  This week in the Octopus group we will be looking at the consonant clusters with 3 letters; scr thr str and tricky words such as one said little.

Keep sounding out carefully for careful spelling!  

Sharks – Beginning Phase 3 – This week Sharks will be learning the ‘oa’sound as in goat, boat and soap.  We will also be reviewing ‘or’and ‘er’

MATHS

In Maths we will be consolidating our knowledge of adding and subtracting.  We will practise all our number bonds  up to 10, answer questions with missing numbers such as 5+_=11 and continue developing our strategies to understand and answer word problems.

THEMED LEARNING

This week in our Themed Learning work we will be hunting for bugs, interesting leaf shapes and other exciting things in nature on our trip to the park! We will also be looking at the life cycle of a bee. We will learn about the different stages of development before these busy buzzers are big enough to make us delicious honey!

VOCABULARY

Maths- add, subtract, equation, sum, total, numbers, amount.

Literacy- insects, minibeasts, descriptions, adjectives, author, title, layout, rhyming, Fiction.

Themed Learning- leaf, leaves, minibeasts, nature, environment, park, plants, insects.

DUTCH

De `Superheldenschool` doet deze week zijn deuren open.  Wat moet je allemaal kunnen om een superheld te worden?   Moet een superheld sterk zijn of kan je ook een lieve, slimme superheld zijn?
