Year 1 Topic Overview (2015-2016)

The children in the primary school at BISS Puxi follow a thematic curriculum with one main topic for each term. Specific skills for every subject are taught through these topics, ensuring subject rigour. This creative curriculum allows for collaboration and exploration making learning active, exciting and meaningful for children. 

Term 1 - Who Am I?

Pupils will learn about the main parts of the human body and the senses we use to interact with the world. We will discuss how different we look now compared to when we were babies. The children will learn about different countries from around the world and will develop their mapping skills using atlases and a variety of non-fiction books. The children will make a family tree and have an opportunity to talk about their family and where they are from. During Art lessons we will look closely at the work of Pablo Picasso to inspire the children’s ideas and generate creativity.

How can I support my child?
  • Try to find your home country on the atlas. Practise using an atlas at home.
  • Print off some family photographs so that your child can share them with the class.
  • Print off a baby photograph and discuss how your child has changed since they were a baby.

Term 2 - All Dressed Up

During this topic the children will learn about different materials. They will investigate the properties of materials and find out what materials are suited to specific jobs. The children will learn where materials come from and how they can be made into useful things that we need in our daily lives. In particular we will look at the materials that clothes are made from. The children will design and make a set of clothes for their favourite toy by cutting, sticking and measuring fabric. In Literacy we will also focus on Fairy Tale stories and will write some stories of our own about dragons, princesses, knights and fairies!

How can I support my child?
  • Read some fairy tale novels (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel etc.).
  • Read some non-fiction books about materials. Where does wood, metal and cotton come from?

Term 3 - Plants and Insects

In Term 3 we will learn about Plants and Insects. The children will learn about the different parts of a plant and why plants are important for life on Earth. They will also carry out a scientific investigation to find out which conditions are best for plant growth. The children will plant their own seeds and learn to care for it, recording the changes that take place during germination. They will also find out about the life cycles of insects and research fascinating facts about them. The children will develop lots of new art skills in order to make 3 dimensional models of ants, caterpillars and butterflies.

How can I support my child?
  • Read some non-fiction books about plants and insects.
  • Read ‘The Tiny Seed’ by Eric Carle.
