Week Beginning 25 January 2016

4P Class Assembly Monday 25 January, 1.45 – 2.30, Stage One. Parents welcome.


  • Uniform:  Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies.  They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and NOT non-uniform versions.  Information is available on the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.


This week in Literacy, the children will continue to focus on non-chronological reports. Using the grammatical and structural skills learnt last week, they will write their own texts about volcanoes. Now that the children are experts at using dictionaries, the teachers are looking forward to seeing which amazing words will be used! The pupils will also continue to think about self and peer assessment by looking at how they can improve their own work.


This week we shall be working with fractions, using them to calculate a fraction of a quantity and learning to split whole numbers into fractional parts. Connections will be made between decimal and fractional notation and a range of problem solving activities will help reinforce children’s understanding and recall of simple fractions and decimals. Visual and practical activities are important to assist with understanding and the children will be encouraged to draw diagrams and build models to represent their thinking. Some students will also be ready to apply their understanding of fractions to simple percentages.


Students will be investigating historical artefacts to solve the mystery of the ancient volcanic eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of the Roman  city of Pompeii.

In Art students will be exploring the art of ‘Kandinsky’ to imitate his famous concentric cirlces and interact with the ‘Power of 42’ through the ‘Global Campus’.


Students will discuss conflict resolution and consider alternative approaches to dealing with problems.


Over the course of the next few weeks, classes will work with Lego Wedo equipment. This is designed to teach modelling and programming skills to children. This year the focus will be on learning and exploring the mechanical aspects of the model and determining how they can change instructions to improve and develop the movement. The children will be encouraged to write their own programs and use their understanding to create models which work in similar ways to the examples.


This week we will be looking at the ‘App’ ‘Show-Me’ to reflect on how it can be used as a tool to explain our learning.

Koken, bakken, braden... Kun jij het spreekwoord raden?

Het nieuwe thema van KS2 staat in het teken van koken en alles wat daarmee te maken heeft (recepten, spijsvertering, het restaurant, ingrediënten, etc.) en de daaraan gekoppelde beeldspraak. We hebben de spreekwoorden van de vorige  weken herhaald.


De Citotoetsen zijn begonnen. Het onderdeel begrijpend lezen hebben we als eerste gedaan. Komende week komen de onderdelen, technisch lezen, spelling en woordenschat aan bod. Oefen met de woordkaartjes van ‘Spelling Laat Zien’ (toegestuurd in de laatste nieuwsbrief) nog een keer de categorieën.

In verband met de Cito-toetsen is er deze week geen huiswerk. De leerlingen mogen natuurlijk wel de (woordenschat)oefeningen van Nieuwsbegrip doen, de spellingkaartjes van ‘Laat Zien’ en de Staal-app.
