Week Beginning 16 November 2015

Uniform: Now that it is colder in the mornings please remember that children should not be wearing leggings, boots or hoodies. They should be wearing school jumpers/cardigans/fleeces and not, non-uniform versions. Information is available in the Primary Parent Handbook on the website.

  • Homework will be issued on Wednesday 18 November and will be due on Monday 23 November.
  • Uniform sale:  We will be having a Used Uniform Stall as part of the upcoming PTA Christmas Fair being held in school on Saturday 28 November.  Please bring any clean, good quality, old uniforms to the Primary Reception over the next few weeks.  Y12 will be running the stall with the support of parents and proceeds will go towards their fundraising.
  • Book Fair:  This year the Book Fair, where you can buy books, will take place in school from Thursday 19-Saturday 21 November.  Letters have been sent out.
  • KS2 book eXchange: Our book eXchange is now open every Tuesday and Thursday lunch time for children to come and borrow, share, exchange, read and talk about books.

In Literacy, we will be beginning an exciting unit of work on narrative. This will involve moving through various elements of story construction to help build an immersive tale. We will begin by looking at the character dynamics within a tale; how the protagonist interacts with other key figures around him or her. We will then look at how to build depth to these characters, building back stories and a spider-web of likes and dislikes. We will then look at how to create an immersive world in which they can inhabit and how a fantastic location can become like an extra character.

In Maths, we will be moving on to look at measure. This will first involve the conversion of units in base 10, from litres to millilitres and so on. We will then look at converting from metric to imperial units, using resources from our cooking room. Finally, we will move onto seeing how to apply this knowledge in a selection of word problems and real life scenarios. Throughout the week, we will also be taking it in turns to use the cookery room to measure amount of ingredients and apply what we have learnt when cooking.

In Themed Learning, we will be looking at the role of women during World War 2 and how the politics of gender relations changed in Europe. The children will discover how the horrors of war were juxtaposed with increasing independence and involvement in the economy for women, with many taking up roles undreamt of before the war.

In PSHCE we will be looking at sexism and gender stereotypes and how lucky we are to live in a world where women are achieving a degree of equality with men. We will also be looking at countries where this is not yet the case and considering why this is.

Literacy – protagonist, plot, enabler, plot-device, setting, guardian

Maths – litre, milliliter, ton, gram, kilogram, conversion

Humanities – sexism, feminist, suffragettes, land girls
