BIS Gardening Programme

Parent Paul Adamson writes about his involvement in school gardening and how it grew into the rich programme it is today:

As a child I grew up playing in the garden, getting my hands dirty, chasing bugs, and playing with snails and slaters. It was good fun! I noticed that expat children often don't have the opportunity to have these types of experiences, or to experience just what it takes to grow the vegetables that magically appear on the supermarket shelves.

As a result, two years ago I volunteered to help with the BIS Abu Dhabi co-curricular activity, the 'Eco Warriors.' Through the CCA we established the first school vegetable patch. Getting the kids digging, planting and growing and watching how much they enjoyed it was truly inspiring. When the PTA learnt of the Eco Warriors they kindly offered to fund an expansion of the club to involve FS and Primary.

With the assistance of Principal Patrick Horne, various year heads, many teachers and a large amount of volunteer parents, we now have all of FS involved, a new Gardening CCA for primary and a section for secondary science.

If any parents have the time to come and have a look, the vegetable patch is at the front of Falcon Sports centre (car park side). You will see tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, eggplant, chillis, mint, parsley and a selection of beautiful flowers. Please don't pick any of the fruit or flowers our children have spent months growing, but do have a look. Feel free to pick a mint leaf, squish it and let your children smell its incredible aroma.

The school gardening programme is still evolving. Given time and the continued support of teachers and parent volunteers it will grow into something even more amazing.

Paul Adamson, BIS Abu Dhabi parent.
