House: New competitions, new leaders create excitement in 2017

Welcome back to what is set to be an even bigger and better year for the House System across the High School and Primary School at St Andrews International School Bangkok.

There have been some changes, improvements and lots more exciting opportunities for students to get involved in. This year the students will take on a more independent role and having a larger say on what goes on within the House System, which is a brilliant opportunity for students to develop lots of different skills.

This week the whole High School will nominate somebody they think would make a good house leader or captain. The person with the most amount of votes will be asked to become the new House Leader/Captain who will represent their Key Stage and, of course, their House. The new House Leaders and Captains will be announced in a few weeks.

So what are the changes? This year we will be creating a more competitive atmosphere against tutor groups and year groups in relation to the amount of points each have received in that week/month. We will be holding at least one whole school House event each term and will be continuing with the Fun Friday events every other week at lunchtime.

Mr Jason (Head of House Systems)

Primary School

We are the new House Leaders in Primary and we would like to introduce ourselves. We have Ms Ellie (Y1) representing Akha, Ms Jen (Y3) in Lahu, Ms Gemma (Y5) in Karen and Ms Helen (Y2) in Yao. We are thrilled to be House Leaders this year and have some fun and exciting ideas to put into place.

First of all we would like to start up a team of children representing the whole school to help share ideas and make decisions because whilst we think we have good ideas… we know that the students have the best ideas!

We are looking for 20 energetic and proactive students from year 1-5 to become part of the house team and be officially named ‘House Representatives’. Specifically, we are going to be appointing one student for each house from each year group i.e. 4 from year 1, 4 from year 2 and so on. We are also looking for 8 year 6 students to be officially named ‘House Captains’ i.e. 1 girl and boy to represent each house. As a House Representative or House Captain, students will be able to share their ideas for Fun Fridays, inform the House Leaders what students at St. Andrews really want to do for events, be involved in assemblies and much more. We are encouraging students to apply to be a House Representative or Captain by registering their interest on Wednesday 6th September on the first floor of the R-Block (Ms. Jen’s room), then prepare a speech by Friday 8th September, ready to present to their Key Stage in Fridays assembly. In the speeches, we would like students to think about:

  1. Why they want to be a House Representative?

  2. What they would like to do as a House Representative?

  3. How can they help the House Team?

  4. Why do they think they would be a good House Representative? Plus anything else they would like to add.

The House Leaders will also be available on Wednesday morning break time to help with any speeches and answer any questions students may have, whilst students register their interest.

We look forward to introducing the new House Representatives and Captains in the near future!

We have challenged the children to come up with a team chant for their house. It needs to be catchy, fun, have a good rhythm, and relatively simple so all children can participate. The video should be less than one minute long.

Children can enter individually or in teams by sending a video to their house leader on the email address below.

We have asked for the videos to be submitted by Friday but we have now extended the deadline to the following Friday.

House Leader email addresses

  • Lahu - Ms. Jen (jen.hy@standrews.ac.th)
  • Yao - Ms. Helen (helen.mu@standrews.ac.th)

We look forward to a great year ahead!
