Primary School Music: A visit from Juilliard

The Primary Music Department at St Andrews International School Bangkok welcomed Juilliard Curriculum Specialist Kathryn Andersen who worked with both teachers and students and looks forward to welcoming two flute specialists this week.

Kathryn Andersen

Last Wednesday we had a very productive day with our Juilliard Curriculum Specialist, Kathryn Andersen. She met with the Primary and High School music teachers to deliver some professional development on ensemble lessons and rehearsals. We looked at four key areas and explored a range of resources to support these objectives:

  • Infuse rehearsals with creativity and a sense of play

  • Develop flexible musicianship

  • Develop students’ artistic voice

  • Explore diverse and high-quality music

Kathryn then led a session with Year 3N on using our voices expressively to communicate emotions and ideas. She then observed each of our Primary music teachers with their classes and there was an opportunity for feedback and discussion.

Flute Visitors from the UK this Week

On 7 and 8 February we look forward to a special visit from British flautists Sarah Newbold and Elisabeth Dooner. These wonderful musicians and teachers bring with them a wealth of experience from orchestral playing with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and are high level college teachers at The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and The Guildhall School of Music in London. They also offer expert knowledge of Dalcroze eurhythmics and body mapping to help our young woodwind players to get to grips with breathing and posture.

During their two-day visit, they will work with Year 5 woodwind players, Reception classes and Year 2, as well as performing in a special assembly.

We very much look forward to their visit.
