Solar Systems!

In year 5 we have been learning all about Space during the autumn term. As the topic is nearly coming to an end, Flamingos were given the chance to show all that they have learned, as well as learn some new skills, by creating their own models of the Solar System!

The children were put into groups, with their first challenge being to create a group name. Soon after, the newly formed Star Academy, Gravity 5 and LVC Stars began planning what kind of model they would like to create. The children were given freedom to choose which type of model they would design and make, with the only instructions being that it should reflect the Solar System. We discussed that the models should include the sun and 8 planets, and that these should be of relative sizes.

After designing their models, the children were ready to start making! The range of skills used in the making stage included using a saw to cut pieces of wood, using a glue gun to join parts together and using paint to give the planets a realistic paint job!

Eventually, after lots of hard work and good collaboration, the models were completed. The children’s final task for the project was to evaluate their model and their team’s performance, before using this along with pictures collected throughout the project to make an iMovie on their iPad.

Flamingos class did extremely well throughout the project and the models look fantastic, as do the iMovies. The children are already looking forward to their next D&T project!
