In Year 3, we will be starting our new topic ‘Light’ where we will be exploring how we see, how light bounces off objects and how light plays a big part in photography. We will start the topic with an exciting experience as we go inside a giant pinhole camera, where we will watch the moving images from outside being projected onto a wall through a tiny lens. Throughout the term, we will also be preparing for our residential to Tianjin. We will look at the history of Tianjin, though its different concessions and the exciting places that we will visit when we are there!
In Year 4, we will be beginning our new topic ‘Bright Sparks’ where we will be looking at electrical circuits. We will be investigating insulators and conductors, and using switches made out of conductive materials to build complete circuits. We will be learning about the history of electricity, focusing on Thomas Edison and his life leading up to his discovery and the impact his work had on society. Using Edison’s discovery as inspiration, we will be exploring scientifically using photography within our MIT challenge entitled ‘A Different Lens’. In the lead up to our residential to Pingyao, we will be researching the ancient city and creating a holiday brochure for potential tourists.
In Year 5, we will be beginning our new topic ‘Battles.’ In this topic, we will be learning about the First Emperor, Qin Xi Huang as well as about how the different dynasties evolved and the impact of the Qin Dynasty upon the world we live in today. We will use technology to guide us on an exciting journey down the Silk Road where we will take part in many educational tasks along the way! The theme of ‘Battles’ will also extend into English where we will be largely focusing Shakespeare’s Macbeth as well as the battle for equal rights in society. Our term will end with a fantastic residential trip to the historical city of Xi’an where we will get the chance to see many impressive things, including the famous Terracotta Warriors!
In Year 6, we will be beginning our new topic ‘Survival of the Fittest’ where we will explore Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. We begin by trekking back to the beginning of time and exploring how live has evolved since. It will be fascinating to learn about DNA: we look at the structure, learn about how genetics are passed down, get to create models using gummy sweets and finally, for our MIT challenge, take close up photos of the DNA we will be extracting from onions! The term will end with a residential to Yangshuo, which is always a highlight of the year!
As you can see, there are a wealth of exciting opportunities for the children to look forward to across KS2. We look forward to sharing the learning with you as the term progresses.
