Back to School Letter from Mr Brett

Dear Parents,

I hope this finds you and your family well.

As we are now preparing to welcome our first group of pupils back to BSB, I wanted to set out an overview of our plan for assessing the children who are returning to BSB and making up any gaps in their academic learning or understanding, which may have been brought about by the extended school closure in the 2019-20 school year. Although this has been referred to as our mitigation plan, I prefer to put it in the context of each pupil’s individual learning journey being carefully assessed and managed by their teacher during this school year.

I would like to make clear that our aim is to ensure each child receives as much academic support as is necessary over the coming weeks and months, to be exactly where they would have been had COVID not struck, within the last school year. That process is going to be tailored to meet each child’s needs and will be done in consultation with parents.

We have several sophisticated assessment tools at our disposal, as well as using the teachers’ own observations and assessments, which help us gather information about a pupil’s progress and attainment, to see where there might be any gaps in their learning and identify where more support may be needed. The standardised GL progress tests that we use in Primary, for example, provide us with important baseline data as well as allowing teachers to understand where the gaps are in a child’s learning.

Once the teachers in each class have had time to conduct their assessments, we will arrange an opportunity for parents to come to school to meet with their child’s class teacher who will discuss the most appropriate next steps. These may include additional ‘catch up’ sessions – either individually or in small groups, as appropriate – or perhaps using some very targeted resources to address a specific area of learning. You may have noticed yourself some areas at home over the past few months that you would like to bring to your child’s teacher’s attention and this will be a perfect opportunity for that. We will send information about the appointments with your child’s teacher in due course after we have had an opportunity to assess your child and determine where they are in their learning journey.

In short, our approach to helping your child/children catch up the learning they have missed because of the school closure will be bespoke to them and tailored to their specific needs.  Your support in this endeavor, as ever, will be vital in terms of understanding how you can help at home.

I am confident that this is the right approach to take in terms of helping our BSB pupils get the most out of this school year and ensure that they get back on track with their learning, securely and with confidence.

As the first day of the new term is now August 31, I attach an updated version of our school calendar for the 2020-2021 school year, which you will also find on our website.

I will be in touch again as term gets under way with further updates on this matter.

With best wishes.

Yours sincerely,

John Brett

John Brett
