Updates from Year 1

Year 1 have been busy finding out about where our food comes from and how to grow our own food.  As part of our Global Campus Curiosity Corner activities and our science lessons, we have collected our own seeds from fruit and vegetables, planted these and looked after them and researched the distance that foods have to travel to get to us from around the world.  The children have understood that transporting food around the world is having a negative impact on the environment and many of them then created a watering can from a recycled bottle – thus helping to reduce the generation of more plastics.  We even made our own biodegradable plant pots from scrap paper and old newspapers.

After finding out more about what plants need and the different parts of the both trees and flowers, the children worked to make a creative collage of a flower using a variety of both natural and man-made art materials, carefully labelling the names and the purpose of each of the parts of the flower.  They also enjoyed a lively (and sometimes loud) game of tree bingo as they consolidated their understanding and knowledge in a fun and engaging way.
