New Year’s here, sunshine is here!

As we say a fond goodbye, auf wiedersehen, 안녕히 가십시오, अलविदा, 再见, さようなら, Au revoir, مع السلامة, arrivederci, Αντιο σας, selamat tinggal and farvel to 2021 and welcome a new year, our EAL students have done the same as they begin new topics to usher in the new year.

Year 1 have begun learning new animal vocabulary used to name different animals found in the zoo. Students played games such as Running Dictation and Simon Says to practise their writing and speaking. The children also used this vocabulary to construct simple sentences and questions to interview each other about their favourite and least favourite animals.

Going higher up in the school, Year 5 have begun learning vocabulary related to the Wild West, and Law and Order. Practising the language in this topic has given them the opportunity to create their own Wanted posters, in both English AND their native language; create dialogues between law enforcement and suspects; and play games such as 2 Truths and a Lie.

We cannot overemphasize how important it is for children to retain and continue learning their native languages alongside English. Their vocabulary bank from their native language provides an excellent foundation on which to build up their English as an additional language. Children are often able to find connections to help them understand tricky new concepts or vocabulary by drawing from what they already know, e.g. looking for cognates (words in two languages that share a similar meaning, spelling and pronunciation) or for similar concepts.
