Spotlight on Sport #1: A message from Mr. Webb

The Athletics Department are passionate about providing a range of sporting experiences for our students. We do this through bespoke coaching programs delivered by experienced coaches. As part of the Key Stage 2 curriculum there is an additional hour for physical education identified on the timetable as Games.  Since the beginning of the academic year, we have worked hard to continue to provide exciting and immersive sporting opportunities for our Key Stage 2 children.

Coach Rachel

Over the next five weeks, we will be shining the sporting spotlight on current Games providers. First in the spotlight is Coach Rachel who hosts live Games sessions for our Classroom Connect students!

How long have you been a coach?
I have been a Gymnastics/Tumbling instructor for 22 years and I have taught Gymnastics based Fitness classes for 10 years.

What do your Games sessions focus on?
We focus on age-appropriate stretching as well as cardiovascular and strength-building exercises. Exercises and activities are adapted to be safe for the children to perform at home, requires little to no equipment, and is easy to remember and repeat without an instructor present.

What do you feel are the benefits of learning this sport?
The goal of this program is to teach children the importance of regular impactful exercise, through fun but challenging workouts. My desire is for every child to gain some understanding of the benefits of exercising beyond just doing actual sports or physical activities. By learning the names of our basic muscle groups and what they control in our bodies, we relate that information to exercises and stretches that strengthen and increase flexibility. We then connect that knowledge to the sports and activities they are involved in, including their P.E. units, and learn how what we are doing will improve their performance in those other areas.

What is the best piece of advice you would offer to a fitness enthusiast?
The thing I find myself saying the most is, "Don't be afraid to challenge yourself." The only way to create change in our bodies is to push ourselves to do things that are difficult for our bodies to do. So if we want to achieve goals like being able to run faster, jump higher, increasing our flexibility and strength, and most importantly BEING HEALTHY, we need to exercise and stretch in a way that is appropriately demanding for our muscular and cardiovascular system.
