Message from Music Department

We have fully embedded the Juilliard Creative Classroom into the music curriculum at BSN and students are accessing the resources in every music lesson.

The Juilliard approach is based on core works and from Year 1-9 we have been using “Ambush from 10 Sides” for the Chinese traditional instrument, the Pipa.

To continue the exploration of basic melodies and motifs in the Primary School we have added the activities of “The Water’s Journey” by Sean Shepherd, to draw on visual sources as inspiration for ideas. The students work with and without restrictions to continue to fire their creativity and develop the questioning skills that make them delve deeper into activities. The activity begins with students seeing how many different things they can see in the picture. Try this now, write down what comes to mind!

How many did you get? Year 3 came up with 27 different things! Everything from a Whale’s tail to a slice of pizza, ladder, smoke, feathers, dinosaurs, Venus fly traps and so on.

Water over Rock Music Class

We then begin to look at sounds and instruments and using layers to create textures. Older Primary school classes then start exploring the possibilities of motifs and journeying with our motifs through the picture. The students are thoroughly enjoying the Juilliard Creative Classroom experience!

We are delighted to announce our Juilliard Curriculum Specialists for this year are Erin Wight, Nick Mahmat and Salla Saarikangas. Our three specialists will be working with students virtually in the classroom and supporting the students and teachers to continue to develop their ideas, more details to follow of when these visits will be.
