Last month, the European Union marked the Unequal Pay Day – a symbolic day to raise awareness of the fact that the day marks the date from which women effectively start working for free until the end of the year, due to the wage gap between male and female employees. The onus is on all companies and employers to hold up a magnifying glass to themselves and make the changes needed.
Inspired by the team of students who tackled the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal Number 5 on Gender Equality in our recent UN Day and created a fantastic display about the gender pay gap on our 4th floor corridor, we have also been looking carefully at how we do things and whether what we do holds back girls in the school, even inadvertently.

I was also honoured to sit down with a small group of girls from across our Secondary School to discuss their ideas and thoughts. This was one of the regular meetings held to ensure students have input on how the school runs. The discussion looked, in particular, at the use of language and how we have a principal (not a headmaster for example) and are working hard to ensure inadvertent use of language does not hold students back. The discussion focused on whether our roles of Head Boy and Head Girl are the right roles for the 21stcentury. I was impressed by the groups intelligent, well thought out arguments and, although we didn’t come to any formal conclusions, they’ve certainly given me plenty to consider.
