Blazing a bright trail!

As we come to the end of the second term and the beginning of April, we also come to a significant anniversary. On Tuesday April 7th 2020, our first students, those in year 10 or higher who were approaching important examinations, returned to face-to-face learning on campus. Over the two months that followed, the majority of our students were able to return to the campus.

That means, whilst students in some countries are marking a very different anniversary, with a year of online learning, some of our students have now spent a full year with their teachers in classrooms.

We are extremely fortunate to be in this position and were the first school across the entire Nord Anglia network, including those in China, to open its doors to students of any age. This put us in the position of trail-blazers, that meant we created the model for re-opening schools (as we had been when the move to virtual learning happened). Across Nord Anglia, schools learnt from our successful road map and were able to anticipate the challenges they might face. It also means that our academic results over the last twelve months reflect that, for our students, their learning has continued in the best possible way.

Of course, we also owe a large part of our fortune to how closely China has managed the pandemic and whilst the restrictions have impacted all of our lives, we also know they have allowed life to return to some sense of normality in Nanjing. These restrictions continue to make leading an international school, where a sense of global connectivity is so important, a challenge but staff, students and our families have risen to these challenges so well!

Award Award

All of this was recently to the fore as Nord Anglia held its annual Conference. Of course, this year it was a virtual conference with principals and leaders across the group coming together to share learning and look at how to develop schools as we move towards a new future. Each year, on the final day of the conference, schools from across the network of over 70 are recognised in various categories with School Awards. This year, we were delighted to see The British School of Nanjing receive the Global Award for the best academic results at A-level, our achievement of 100% A* or A grade setting a very high bar for others to aspire to, and the China Regional Award recognising the work done over the year, in challenging circumstances, to keep our students learning, safely on site.

It is wonderful to see BSN’s star continue to rise in this way and I look forward to the school continue to do so in the coming year!
