Dear Parents,

Welcome to Autumn Term 2017 at Compass Rayyan. Over the summer break, the Facilities Team worked hard to improve our provision adding a multi sports pitch; a specially designed Early Years learning area; new Arabic classrooms; new toilets; a faster, high speed internet connection; sound and recording systems; and, improved office space. The improvements have enabled us to add Bilingual classes to meet parent demand and to enhance the Early Years’ learning experience.

We were delighted to see such happy and excited children on Sunday when they joined their new class and teacher. Those first feelings of apprehension have disappeared as the children made new friends or found old friends and settled very quickly into class routines. We are looking forward to a highly successful year where the children will be nurtured, challenged and encouraged to be the best they can be.

Early Years had a fantastic start to the term and are enjoying their new outdoor learning area. Please see the separate article about it here.

On the first Wednesday of every month we hold an informal ‘Drop in for Coffee’ to give parents a chance to meet other parents and members of staff. It was a pleasure to see so many parents join us this week. I look forward to meeting more of you in the near future.

Next week we will be holding ‘Class in Action’ mornings in school. Parents are invited to attend their child’s class and experience learning first hand. This is a great opportunity to get to know the teacher, learn about our teaching and learning philosophy and participate in a lesson. We hope that you will join us. The timings are as follows:

  • Monday, 18 September: Years 5 and 6, 7.30-8.30am
  • Tuesday, 19 September: Years 3 and 4, 7.30-8.30am
  • Wednesday, 20 September: Years 1 and 2, 7.30-8.30am
  • Thursday, 21 September: Early Years 1 and 2, 7.30-8.30am

This year we are working on improving ‘Student Voice’ at Rayyan. This is where students are given the ability to influence learning by sharing their views on policies, programs, contexts and principles within the context of learning and education. We will have Student Councillors, Eco Warriors, House Captains and a Head Boy and Girl. Elections will be conducted in school next week and students will be given the opportunity to present their manifesto and ideas for improvement.

The new Head Boy and Head Girl roles are being introduced to select students who will be internal and external ambassadors and act as outstanding role models for all students at Compass International School. They will represent and speak for all students in the school and support and prepare activities that encourage and support the learning of others. The Head Boy and Girl will be chosen by the Leadership Team.

Inevitably, student roles are very popular in school. Many children will present their manifesto, but only one from each class can be chosen. We must teach our children to be resilient; to bounce back from disappointment and become stronger from the experience. This applies to all aspects of life; if not successful this time, learn from the experience and try again next time. There are many opportunities for children to stand out in school throughout the year, this is only one of them.

ECA lists will be sent home today. We have tried our best to give every child their first or second choice and ensure that all children have an ECA. Many of the ECA’s are oversubscribed and were filled very quickly.  It is a huge administration task so thank you to our School Secretary, Clair for organising then and to parents for their understanding.

Due to shipping and transport delays beyond our control, the new supplies of school uniform have not arrived in Uniform Mart yet. We will update you on the situation as soon as possible and arrange for a Pop Up shop on campus once supplies are available.

We will shortly be starting our Parent Seminars in school with an Arabic Workshop for parents. If you have any aspect of school life that you would like to learn more about, please let me know and I will arrange a workshop on that subject. We would like parents to work in partnership with us and their children to ensure academic success and sharing our methods and philosophy help you to help your children.

Thank you for your warm welcome and support during this first week back at school. I wish you and your children a very successful and happy academic year.

Kind regards,

Ann Djedid
